How Saturn Relay Key Systems Evolved
1st Generation (Pre-facelift)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your 2005 or 2006 Relay uses a Texas 4D (ID45) transponder chip inside a standard blade key with a 3-button remote head. The immobilizer is GM's Pass-Key III+ system, which reads the chip when you turn the ignition. No push-button start, no proximity fob, just a solid transponder key with a CR2032 battery powering the remote buttons.
1st Generation (Facelift)
On-board programming works exactly the same here. Saturn upgraded the engine to a 3.9L V6 with variable valve timing and added StabiliTrak for 2007, but the key system stayed identical. Same Texas 4D (ID45) chip, same Pass-Key III+ immobilizer, same 3-button remote head with a standard blade and CR2032 battery. If you know how to handle a 2005, you know how to handle a 2007.
Which Key Does Your Saturn Relay Use?
A standard metal blade with a chunky plastic head that holds both the transponder chip and three remote buttons. You turn it in the ignition like a traditional key, but the chip inside talks to your Relay's immobilizer every time you start it.
Identical key to the 2005-2006 models. Same standard blade, same 3-button remote head, same Texas 4D (ID45) chip inside. The 2007 facelift changed the engine but left the key system completely alone.

Common Saturn Relay Key Problems
Transponder Key Failure
After 15+ years, the Texas 4D chip in the Relay key head can degrade or lose its signal. The key turns the ignition, but the engine will not fire and the security light stays on. Marco tests the chip with diagnostic tools before recommending a replacement.
Sliding Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
First Marco checks whether the power sliding door motor is getting signal. The lock actuator is notorious for burning out, and when it does, power locks stop responding. Marco diagnoses actuator, module, or wiring and points you to the right repair.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
High-mileage 2006-2007 Relays develop worn tumblers in the ignition cylinder. The key turns but wafers are so worn the cylinder does not register key position. Intermittent no-starts that look transponder-related but are mechanical. Marco tells the difference on-site.
Fob Signal Weakness
The real problem on older Relay fobs is corrosion on the internal circuit board or weakened battery contacts, not the battery itself. A fresh CR2032 will not fix corroded solder. Marco opens the fob, inspects, and tells you whether cleaning restores it.
Can You Program a Saturn Relay Key Yourself?
Yes, the 2005-2006 Relay supports GM's 10-minute on-board relearn procedure. You insert a pre-cut transponder key, turn to ON for exactly 10 minutes and 30 seconds, repeat that cycle three times, and the key programs itself. The catch: this erases all previously programmed keys, and the timing has to be precise or you will need to wait an hour before trying again.
Same deal as the earlier years. The 2007 Relay uses the identical Pass-Key III+ system and supports the same 10-minute on-board relearn. You need a correctly cut transponder key blank with a compatible chip, about 35 minutes of patience, and a timer you trust. If you are not confident in the timing, call Marco and he will handle it with his scan tools in a fraction of the time.

Did You Know?
The Saturn Relay shares its U-Body platform with the Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, and Buick Terraza. All four were discontinued after 2007 as GM shifted away from minivans entirely. Four brands, one platform, one short production run. That is a lot of corporate effort for a three-year lifespan. Marco still sees the occasional Relay on calls between Carmel Valley and Del Mar.
