Which Key Does Your Saturn Relay Take?
A metal blade attached to a plastic head that holds the transponder chip and three remote buttons. You insert and turn it like any traditional key, but the chip inside communicates with the factory immobilizer on every start attempt. Without a programmed chip, the engine won't run even if the blade is cut perfectly.
Identical in every way to the 2005-2006 key. Same blade, same plastic remote head, same transponder chip inside. The 2007 facelift updated the drivetrain but left the key hardware completely untouched, so service is the same across all three model years.
Saturn Relay Key Systems Through the Years
Transponder Remote Head Key (2005-2006)
The 2005 and 2006 Relay came with a standard blade key built into a chunky plastic remote head that houses both the transponder chip and three remote buttons. The factory immobilizer reads that chip every time you turn the ignition, and if it doesn't get the right signal, the engine won't start. The good news is that on-board programming is supported, meaning a properly cut and chipped blank can be added without dealer-grade programming equipment in most situations. Power comes from a CR2032 battery for the remote buttons. No push-to-start, no proximity fob, just a straightforward transponder key.
Transponder Remote Head Key (2007)
Saturn gave the 2007 Relay a refreshed engine and added stability control, but the key system didn't change at all. Same standard blade, same three-button remote head, same transponder chip, same CR2032 battery. On-board programming works here exactly as it does on the earlier models. If you've dealt with a 2005 or 2006 Relay key, the 2007 is no different from a locksmith's perspective. The mechanical and electronic key hardware carried over without modification.

Common Saturn Relay Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
The blade still turns the ignition, the security light stays on, and the engine won't fire. After fifteen-plus years, the transponder chip inside a Relay key can degrade or lose its signal entirely, and owners often blame the ignition cylinder first. We test the chip with our diagnostic equipment before recommending a replacement, so you're not buying a new key when the problem is something else entirely.
Sliding Door Lock Actuator Failure
When the power locks on a sliding door stop responding, the first thing we check is whether the actuator motor is receiving a signal at all. The lock actuator on these Relays has a reputation for burning out, and when it does, that door goes completely dead to the remote and the interior switch. We can diagnose whether it's the actuator, the control module, or a wiring fault, and steer you toward the right repair.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
High-mileage 2006 and 2007 Relays commonly develop worn tumblers inside the ignition cylinder. The key goes in and turns, but the internal wafers are worn enough that the cylinder doesn't register the key position reliably, producing intermittent no-starts that look like a transponder issue but are purely mechanical. We can make that distinction on-site before you spend money on a key that won't solve the problem.
Remote Fob Weak Signal
A fresh CR2032 goes in and the range improves for a week, then shrinks again. On these older Relay remotes, the real cause is usually corrosion on the circuit board or deteriorated battery contacts rather than a dead battery. We can open the remote head, inspect the board, and tell you whether a cleaning will bring it back or whether you need a new remote head key cut and programmed.
Can You Program a Saturn Relay Key at Home?
For 2005 and 2006 Relays, yes. GM built an on-board relearn into these vans. You insert a pre-cut transponder key blank with the correct chip, turn the ignition to ON, and hold it there for exactly 10 minutes and 30 seconds while the security light flashes. Turn it off, then back on within 45 seconds, and repeat that cycle two more times. After the third cycle, test the start. The catch is that the procedure erases every previously programmed key, and if your timing is off by even a few seconds you'll need to wait an hour before trying again.
The 2007 Relay uses the same on-board relearn procedure as the earlier years. You still need a correctly cut blank with a compatible transponder chip, a reliable timer, and about 35 minutes to work through all three cycles. If the timing goes wrong or the chip in your blank isn't compatible, you'll be locked into a wait before you can retry. If that sounds like more risk than you want to take in a San Diego parking lot, we can handle the programming with dealer-grade equipment in a fraction of the time.

The Saturn Relay shares its platform with the Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, and Buick Terraza.
