Got a call from a woman over in Otay Mesa West. She had a 2007 Saturn Relay and her only fob had stopped locking the doors reliably. Sometimes it worked from the driveway, sometimes she had to walk up and stand next to the van. She figured the battery was going and had already swapped it herself. Didn't help much.
When I pulled up she handed me the fob and I could see the case had a stress crack along the seam, the kind that happens when someone pries it open with a flathead instead of a case-opening tool. The battery was seated fine, but one of the internal contact points had a slight lift to it from the forced open. Intermittent contact. Works sometimes, fails at range.
I popped a fresh case, moved the board over, seated a new CR2032, and tested every button function from across the parking lot. Lock, unlock, panic, the sliding door buttons, all of it. Solid from distance.
Then I tested the key itself to confirm the transponder was reading clean. It was. She only needed the remote sorted, not a full relearn.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a replacement fob plus a programming fee and a wait for parts to come in. She got out of this for a fraction of that, on the spot, without moving the van.
