2006 Saturn Relay
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a transponder key and why does the car need it programmed?

The key blade gets you past the lock cylinder, but the chip in the key head is what tells the immobilizer it's an authorized key. No signal, or a signal the immobilizer doesn't recognize, and the engine won't stay running even if the key turns fine mechanically. When we cut and program a replacement, we use the OBD port to register the new chip to your specific vehicle.

Q: My key broke off inside the ignition. Can you fix that on site?

Yes. Extraction first, then inspection. A broken key can do more than just get stuck. The blade fragments can catch on the internal wafers inside the cylinder and cause binding or wear. I check the cylinder after extraction to see if it still turns cleanly and holds the detents the way it should. If the cylinder is damaged, I can address that on site as well. Either way, you'll know exactly what the situation is before any work gets done.

Q: The engine starts and then immediately stalls. Could that be a key or immobilizer problem?

That exact symptom, starts then stalls within a second or two, is a classic sign the immobilizer didn't accept the key. The engine fires on the crank but the security system cuts it back down before it can idle. On the 2006 Relay, you may see a security-related indicator on the dash when this happens. If you do, don't keep cranking. Repeated failed attempts can trigger a lockout timer that makes you wait before the system will try again.

Q: I bought a replacement key online. Can you just program it for me?

Bring it and I'll check it. The catch with aftermarket transponder keys is that not all of them carry the right chip for the 2006 Relay's immobilizer. If the chip type doesn't match what the system expects, programming won't take no matter what tool you use. I can test the key head before attempting anything. If it's compatible, I program it. If it's not, I have the correct key on hand and we go from there.

2006 Saturn Relay Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked at a shop unit in Poway Business Park when the call came in. A guy a few blocks away had a 2006 Saturn Relay minivan, one key, and it had just snapped in the door lock. The blade was in two pieces and the last working key was now garbage.

He'd called the dealer first. They told him they'd need the vehicle brought in, and the wait for the appointment plus the job itself was going to stretch into the next day. He had tools in that van and a job to finish.

I pulled up, confirmed the vehicle, and got to work at his location. Cut a replacement blade to the vehicle, programmed the transponder chip using the OBD port, and verified the engine started and stayed running. No stall, no warning light sitting on, no drama.

The whole thing wrapped up before he'd have even made it to the dealer parking lot. He paid what I quoted on the phone. That's the whole story.

Saturn Relay Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2006 Saturn Relay key have any remote buttons on it?▼

No. The 2006 Saturn Relay uses a straight transponder key with no remote functions built in. It's a key blade with a chip in the head, and that's it. No lock, unlock, or panic buttons. If you've seen listings online for fobs that claim to fit this vehicle, those are separate remotes that work through a different system and are not part of the ignition key itself. What we replace and program is the transponder key that starts the van.
