2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A muffler shop over in Rancho Del Oro called me on a Tuesday. They had a customer's 2011 Outlander sitting in a bay, key situation already gone sideways before I got involved.
The shop had called a locksmith the day before. That locksmith tried to program a replacement smart key, hit an immobilizer error partway through, and left. Told the shop the module was probably bad. The customer was now looking at a flatbed, a dealer, and an open-ended wait.
I got there and the car would crank but not start. The immobilizer was rejecting every key, including a spare the owner still had. That's the sign of a corrupted registration, not a dead module. A bad module behaves differently.
I pulled the relevant control module and put it on my bench programmer in the van. Read the data, found the fault state sitting right there in the registration memory, cleared it, and rebuilt the key table from scratch. Reinstalled the module, went through a clean programming sequence with the new fob, and then tested the existing spare on top of that.
Both keys started the car. All four buttons worked on the new fob. Door locks, the whole thing.
The shop foreman watched the whole bench process, and I walked him through what the previous attempt had done wrong so he'd know what to tell the next guy. The owner saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and the car left under its own power that afternoon instead of on a flatbed.
Bench tools exist for exactly this kind of job. OBD alone hits a wall when the module is already in a fault state.
