A muffler shop off the main corridor in San Marcos, not far from the CSUSM Area, called me about a 2018 Outlander sitting in their lot. The customer needed a key. Another locksmith had already been out, got an immobilizer error, and left. The shop was now stuck with a car they could not move and a customer who had no working key and no straight answer about what happened.
When I got there, the story came out in pieces. The first locksmith had started a key registration sequence, hit an error partway through, and pulled out. That kind of incomplete attempt can leave the security system in a fault state that looks like a dead module. The shop had been told the module might be bad. It was not.

I pulled the relevant control module, read the data off the board, cleared the fault condition, and rebuilt the key registration from a clean state. I walked the shop foreman through what had actually happened so he would know what to watch for if it ever came up again. He appreciated that more than I expected.
The whole job ran about 75 minutes including module removal and reinstall. The customer got a working key, a clear system, and a real explanation. The dealer alternative would have been a flatbed, a multi-day wait, and a bill nobody wanted to look at.
