The Eclipse Key Architecture, 2000 Through 2007
Transponder Key, No Remote
This is where the Mitsubishi Anti-Theft System launched on the Eclipse. Your key carries a Texas Instruments 4D60 chip moulded into the head with no remote and no buttons. Looks like a regular key, but without the chip handshake against the ignition antenna ring the engine refuses to fire.
Remote Head Key with Buttons
Mitsubishi upgraded to a remote-head key with three buttons (lock, unlock, trunk). Chip shifted to a Texas Instruments 4D61 and the key now runs a CR2032 to power remote functions. Same standard blade profile, but the key does double duty as starter plus remote.
Transponder-Only Variant
Some Eclipse models in this range shipped a transponder-only key with a Texas Instruments 4D61 chip carrying an N Stamp designation. No buttons, no remote, just a standard blade with the chip inside. The variant shares its platform with the Chrysler Sebring Coupe, which is why the blade profiles look so similar.
Identify Your Eclipse Key
Plain-looking key with no buttons and no battery. The transponder chip sits hidden in the plastic head, talking to the ignition antenna every time you turn the key.
Three buttons moulded into the head (lock, unlock, trunk). The transponder chip and remote electronics live together in one piece, so you carry one key not two.
Visually identical to the earlier transponder key, but the chip is an updated 4D61. No remote functions. If the Eclipse in this range has no buttons on the key, this is it.
San Diego Pricing on an Eclipse Key
Price covers the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and on-vehicle testing on the San Diego curb.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the San Diego Mitsubishi Dealer
Same diagnostic gear the dealer runs. Difference is the van comes to your driveway and the bill is roughly half.
San Diego Eclipse Key Problems We Knock Out
Key Memory Deletion on Programming
The Eclipse immobilizer wipes every key the moment a new one programs. By design, not a glitch. Every existing key must be physically present or the old ones become paperweights. We confirm count before the cutter touches anything.
Immobilizer ECU Linked to Engine Management
Before we touch a 2005-2007 Eclipse no-start: check whether the immobilizer ECU or engine management ECU was swapped. On these cars they are paired. Swap one without the other and the whole system needs re-pairing with the key antenna.
Fault Codes Must Be Cleared Post-Programming
Eclipse fires fine after new keys but the security or check-engine light stays lit. Programming sets fault codes; skipping the clear leaves warning lights or intermittent immobilizer behavior. We clear every code as part of every job.
Remote Fob Programming Time Sensitivity
Owners assume the 2005-2007 remote is defective when it refuses to program. Real issue is timing. Strict 30-second to one-minute windows; missing by seconds kills the sequence. Top reason DIY remote programming fails on this car.
Can You Program an Eclipse Key Yourself?
No path for the transponder. The 4D60 chip needs professional diagnostic gear to write to the immobilizer. Remote-only is possible on 2000-2003 cars using a DLC jumper and the hazard-switch method, but that only programs keyless entry, not the chip.
The transponder chip demands professional tools, period. Remote buttons may DIY if you have a working key in hand using the ignition-key method, but the immobilizer side that actually fires the engine still needs a diagnostic scanner.
Same story as the other transponder keys. The 4D61 N Stamp chip has to be programmed with professional equipment. No shortcut.

San Diego Eclipse Trivia
The Eclipse Anti-Theft System stores up to 8 keys on early cars and 4 on later CAN-based units. Hard catch: programming any new key instantly wipes every previously programmed key from immobilizer memory, which is why every key has to be physically present at the vehicle during service. One of the more restrictive immobilizer designs Mitsubishi ever shipped.
