If the shell or blade goes bad but the chip is intact, that transponder can sometimes be transferred to a new key head without a full reprogramming session. Depends on the specific blank and how the chip is housed.

My 2005 Eclipse starts and then immediately stalls. Could that be a key problem?

That's a classic symptom of the immobilizer not accepting the key. The engine starts on the mechanical signal from the ignition cylinder, then the security system checks the transponder chip, doesn't recognize it, and shuts the engine down within one to two seconds. It can happen with a key that was never properly programmed, a key that lost its chip registration, or sometimes after the battery was fully disconnected for a long period. If your key is worn and the chip is barely being read, you can get an intermittent version of the same stall, works sometimes, fails others. That inconsistency is the tell. I found a replacement key blank online for my 2005 Eclipse. Can I just have it cut and skip the programming?

No. Cutting the blade gets you into the ignition cylinder. The transponder chip still has to be enrolled in the vehicle's immobilizer or the engine will stall out right after starting. The cut and the programming are two separate steps and both have to be right. Also worth knowing: not every blank sold online carries the correct chip for this vehicle.
