2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2005 Eclipse?

A properly cut and programmed key should last as long as the original. The transponder chip doesn't wear out and the programming doesn't drift over time. The physical side is where these eventually show their age: the blade wears from repeated use in the ignition cylinder, and the plastic key head can crack after years of being on a heavy keyring.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us and we come back. Every key we make is covered. The most common post-job failure on a transponder key isn't the programming, it's a chip that got damaged during cutting if the wrong equipment was used, or a key that was registered to the vehicle but has a marginal read range because the chip isn't seated correctly in the blank.

Q: My 2005 Eclipse starts and then immediately stalls. Could that be a key problem?

That's a classic symptom of the immobilizer not accepting the key. The engine starts on the mechanical signal from the ignition cylinder, then the security system checks the transponder chip, doesn't recognize it, and shuts the engine down within one to two seconds. It can happen with a key that was never properly programmed, a key that lost its chip registration, or sometimes after the battery was fully disconnected for a long period.

Q: I found a replacement key blank online for my 2005 Eclipse. Can I just have it cut and skip the programming?

No. Cutting the blade gets you into the ignition cylinder. The transponder chip still has to be enrolled in the vehicle's immobilizer or the engine will stall out right after starting. The cut and the programming are two separate steps and both have to be right. Also worth knowing: not every blank sold online carries the correct chip for this vehicle. A blank with the wrong chip type can be cut perfectly and still never program correctly.

2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the Richland neighborhood in San Marcos when a call came in. A woman had snapped her only key for her 2005 Eclipse, blade still in the ignition lock. She'd already tried her roadside assistance app and got a two-hour window with no guarantee they could handle the programming side.

She had been at a medical appointment nearby and had a shift to get to that evening. Not a lot of flex in her day.

I got there, extracted the broken blade from the cylinder without damaging the lock, cut a new key blade to match her vehicle, and programmed the transponder on site. When she turned the key for the first time, no stall, no security light staying on, engine just ran.

She mentioned almost calling the dealer first. They would have needed the car towed to them, and she was already past business hours by the time we finished anyway.

Wednesday afternoon problem. Wednesday afternoon solved. That's the job.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Mitsubishi vehicles?▼

We use blanks that are verified to match the correct transponder chip spec for your exact vehicle. Mitsubishis are picky about this. The wrong chip type in the key head will crank the engine and cut it almost immediately, a security system rejection that looks like a mechanical or fuel problem if you don't know what you're dealing with. We confirm the correct blank before we leave for your location, not when we're already standing next to your car.
