2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long should a replacement key last on a 2002 Eclipse?

The transponder side does not degrade. Once it is programmed and the immobilizer recognizes it, that pairing is stable. What wears is the blade itself, same as the original. On a 20-plus-year-old car, the cylinder wafers have some wear already, so a fresh-cut blade actually tends to feel better than the worn original did.

Q: What if my new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. If the key stops starting the car or develops any issue, I come back and sort it out. This is exactly the risk with buying a key blank online and handing it to someone without the right tools for this generation.

Q: My 2002 Eclipse starts fine sometimes and then just cranks with no start other times. Could this be the transponder key failing?

That intermittent no-start pattern is a known complaint on this generation and the transponder is absolutely worth looking at first. When the chip inside the key gets a hairline crack or the coil ring around the ignition cylinder shifts slightly, the immobilizer reads the key inconsistently. Sometimes it authenticates, sometimes it does not. The engine cranks but does not fire because the immobilizer is blocking fuel or spark.

Q: I lost my only key for a 2002 Eclipse. Can you still make one with no working key to start from?

Yes. All-keys-lost on this generation is a standard job. The lock gets decoded mechanically to cut the blade, and the transponder gets programmed through the OBD port without needing an existing working key present. It takes a bit longer than adding a spare to an existing key, but it is fully doable on site in Rancho Bernardo without a tow to the dealer.

2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in the Westwood area of Rancho Bernardo flagged me down after calling from a gas station. He had pulled in to fill up his 2002 Eclipse and noticed his key was binding in the ignition cylinder, not smoothly turning, just catching and grinding slightly on the way out. He could feel the blade flexing. He had the good sense not to force it.

The blade was worn down enough that the wafers in the cylinder were dragging on it. Not snapped yet, but close. I decoded the lock from the door cylinder where the cuts were still readable, got a clean read, and cut a fresh key blade to match.

From there it was transponder programming through the OBD port. One session, both keys present because he happened to have his spare in his wallet, and the immobilizer learned them both. The whole thing wrapped up at the gas station, no tow, no waiting room.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a multi-day turnaround just to get a key made. I was done before his tank finished pumping.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse?▼

We match the correct key blank and transponder chip to this specific vehicle before heading out. The 2002 Eclipse is old enough that the blank supply is well established, and we work with verified stock that is confirmed compatible with this generation's immobilizer. Mitsubishi systems on this era can be picky about chip compatibility, so using a mismatched blank is a reliable way to end up with a key that mechanically turns but never gets the engine running.
