The Lancer Key Architecture, 8th Through 10th Generation
8th Gen (CS/CSA)
Your 2003-2007 Lancer rides a 3-button remote-head key with a Texas 4D61 transponder and a standard blade. FCC ID OUCG8D-525M-A. One of the easier Mitsubishis to flash on the curb. We close it out through OBD-II in your San Diego driveway, no push-button start, just a traditional ignition cylinder turn.
9th Gen (CZ)
9th gen jumped to a 4-button smart key with push-button start through the FAST Key system. Philips ID46 chip inside, FCC ID OUC644M-KEY-N. Programming demands professional OBD-II equipment with no DIY shortcut available. We handle these on the curb across San Diego without drama.
9th Gen Facelift
The 9th gen facelift kept the 4-button smart-key shape and push-button start but layered server authentication on top of the programming flow. ID46 chip continues, FCC ID OUC644M-KEY-N or MIT17A-PT depending on trim. We always VIN-verify before the van rolls so the right blank lands on the truck.
10th Gen (LA)
The 2016-2017 10th gen pivoted back to a 4-button remote-head with a Texas 4D transponder, FCC ID OUCJ166N. No push-button start on this generation, ignition-cylinder turn returns. OBD-II programming, and the FCC spec is unforgiving: a mismatch and nothing syncs.
Identify Your Lancer Key
Traditional remote-head with the buttons moulded into the head. You slide the blade into the ignition and turn it to fire. The transponder chip lives inside the head.
FAST Key proximity fob with push-button start. Stay in your pocket, the car shakes hands with you on approach. Hidden mechanical blade tucked inside for emergencies.
Externally a copy of the 2008-2012 smart key, internally upgraded with server-verification security. Side by side you cannot tell them apart.
Back to ignition-cylinder turn. Four buttons across the face (lock, unlock, trunk, panic). Texas 4D chip inside that demands professional programming.
San Diego Pricing on a Lancer Key
Price covers the key blank, cutting, programming, and on-vehicle testing; San Diego lockouts run $105 to $145.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the San Diego Mitsubishi Dealer
All keys lost? The dealer needs a flatbed and a week. The van rolls up and makes new keys from scratch on the curb same-day.
San Diego Lancer Key Problems We Knock Out
Smart Key Programming Failures
First check on any Lancer no-start: did someone flash with the wrong tool? OUC644M-KEY-N and MIT17A-PT smart fobs on 2008-2017 Lancers demand OBD-II gear and a VIN-derived PIN. Five fails locks FAST Key. We reset on the curb, often saving the BCM.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
Owners default-blame a dead battery. Rarely the root. On 2003-2012 Lancers the transponder can lose sync with the ECU after a battery swap or electrical hiccup. Remote buttons work, engine refuses. A 15-minute OBD-II relearn closes it out.
Key Fob Battery Drain
The 2016-2017 Lancer fob burns through CR2032s faster than expected. Constant proximity polling drains cheap cells in a few months. Range shrinks before the cell quits entirely. Drop a quality-brand CR2032 in and you should pull a solid year from it.
FCC ID Mismatch
Lancer keys across generations look identical, but FCC IDs differ. OUCG8D-525M-A, OUC644M-KEY-N, OUCJ166N: each talks to a different immobilizer. Wrong blank in your 2014 refuses to pair. We VIN-verify the FCC ID before cutting, in Mira Mesa or El Cajon.
Can You Program a Lancer Key Yourself?
Halfway. Remote buttons enroll yourself with an OBD jumper wire and the hazard-switch procedure: lock, unlock, trunk. The transponder chip side still needs us, because that is the half that actually authorises the engine.
No DIY path. FAST Key requires professional OBD-II tooling and a VIN-derived PIN. Ignition-cycle tricks do nothing, and a failed attempt can put the BCM into a sulk.
Same lockout as 2008-2012 with server authentication piled on top. Professional tools and an online PIN calculation are mandatory. No shortcut.
The Texas 4D chip in your 2016-2017 demands OBD-II programming with professional equipment. No self-programming exists for this generation.

San Diego Mitsubishi Trivia
The 2008-2017 Lancer FAST Key smart keys debuted 315 MHz proximity detection on mainstream Mitsubishi sedans. That same RF architecture later became the backbone for the proximity systems Mitsubishi shipped on the Outlander and Eclipse Cross, which is why one tool family covers all three on the curb today.
