Out near Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, a woman called me about a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer. She had bought it used a few years back with one key. Always meant to get a second one cut. Never got around to it.
Then the fob housing cracked, probably from being dropped one too many times on pavement. She kept using it taped together until she tried to use the emergency blade one morning and it snapped off inside the door lock. Fob shell in one hand, blade stuck in the cylinder, zero working keys.
When I got there, the first thing I checked was the chip inside that cracked fob. The housing was destroyed but the transponder was intact. That mattered because I could pull the existing data rather than run a full all-keys-lost reset, which takes longer and costs more.
I extracted the broken blade from the door lock, decoded the cut from the lock cylinder, and cut two new blades to match. Then I rebuilt her original fob into a fresh shell using the salvaged chip, and programmed a second fob so she actually had a spare this time. Tested every button, tested the ignition start on both keys, walked the doors.
She watched the whole thing from her building steps, and when both keys fired the car the first time, she said she wished she had done this years ago instead of living with the taped-up fob.
The dealer had been mentioned somewhere in the conversation. I do not remember how it came up, but the number she had heard was enough to make her put it off. Doing it in her parking lot, on her schedule, for a fraction of that was the whole point.
