I got a call from a guy parked near Buena Creek in Vista. He had been having an on-and-off thing with his 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer for a couple of weeks. Some mornings the car started right up. Other mornings he would press the start button and get nothing, or a key-not-detected warning on the dash. No pattern he could figure out.

The CR2032 he installed was seated a little loose, and one of the contact clips inside the fob housing had a slight inward bend from where he had pried the case open. The battery was making inconsistent contact. Not dead, just unreliable. I straightened the clip, reseated the battery, and snapped the case back together properly.
Then I did what I always do before calling the job done: walked through every function. Lock, unlock, and the start sequence. The car responded clean on every test.
He mentioned the dealer had already told him over the phone that this kind of intermittent issue usually meant the fob needed to be replaced and reprogrammed, and they wanted him to come in and leave the car. He had not gone yet because he did not want to deal with the drop-off. Good call on his part. This was a contact issue, not a fob failure. He did not need a new key at all.
