2014 Mitsubishi Lancer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Lancer to the dealer for a key replacement?

No. The dealer will tell you to tow it in, especially with no working key, but that's not your only option. Mitsubishi's dealer network is thinner than most brands, so depending on where you are in Chula Vista, the nearest one could be a real haul. Towing adds cost and time before the key work even starts.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I also verify the VIN from the dash plate or door jamb before starting any work. That's standard practice for any locksmith and for any dealer. Key data for your vehicle is tied to the VIN, and no one legitimate will program a key without confirming ownership first. The difference with me is that the whole verification process happens on site, right there with you, instead of at a service counter.

Q: My Lancer fob range has gotten really short. Is the fob dying or is something else going on?

Short range on the 2014 Lancer fob is almost always the CR2032 going soft before it goes dead. The fob will still work at close range while the battery has just enough output, but it stops triggering the door handles from a normal distance. Swap the battery first. If range comes back, that was it.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a locksmith?

You need a locksmith or dealer with the right diagnostic equipment. The 2014 Lancer Smart Key system does not have an onboard self-programming sequence. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button combination, no DIY relearn for a smart fob on this vehicle. The fob you bought online is just a blank until it gets registered to your car's security system through the OBD port. Bring the fob with you when you call.

2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Millenia area of Chula Vista, I got a call from a guy who was stuck in a motel parking lot with a 2014 Lancer that wouldn't acknowledge his fob at all. He'd tried the door handles, tried the start button, nothing. His backup plan was to sleep on it and figure it out in the morning.

He'd already done the battery swap himself, which I respected. The CR2032 was new and seated correctly. So this wasn't a dead-battery call. The fob had stopped communicating with the vehicle's security system, and the car had no memory of it. That happens sometimes after a deep battery drain in the vehicle, or after certain battery disconnect events. The fob is still physically fine, but the pairing is gone.

I pulled up to the motel, confirmed the VIN, checked his ID and registration, and got to work at the OBD port. The 2014 Lancer Smart Key system requires diagnostic equipment to register a fob, no ignition-turn sequence exists for this setup. I registered the fob to the vehicle, confirmed all four buttons were transmitting correctly, and walked both door handles and the start function before calling it done.

He asked about the dealer as I was packing up. I told him they'd want the car towed in, probably a next-day appointment, and the bill would be a good chunk more than what he paid me. He'd already mentally budgeted for the tow when he found my number. Skipping that part alone made the call feel like a win before I even finished the job.

Mitsubishi Lancer Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. If you're anywhere in Chula Vista, including the Millenia area, I come to you. You don't need a tow, you don't need to arrange a ride to a dealer, and you don't need to wait overnight for a service appointment. I carry the equipment and fob blanks for the 2014 Lancer in the van. One call and we sort out the location. That's the whole point of a mobile service.
