2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Scam operations follow a pattern: low number on the phone, inflated bill once you're stuck and out of options. A real automotive locksmith gives you an actual estimate for your specific vehicle before showing up, has a verifiable business name, real reviews, and can explain the process for your exact car. For a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse transponder key, that means cutting the key blade to your vehicle and programming the transponder to the immobilizer.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. A properly programmed transponder key for your 2001 Eclipse communicates with the immobilizer the same way the factory key does. The engine starts and stays running. We test it on site before we call the job done. The failure mode to avoid is a key that's been cut to fit but never had the transponder programmed, or one programmed with substandard equipment that leaves the immobilizer in a confused state.

Q: My 2001 Eclipse cranks fine but immediately stalls every time I try to start it. Could this be the key?

That's a classic immobilizer symptom. When the immobilizer doesn't recognize the transponder signal, it lets the engine crank and fire briefly, then cuts fuel or ignition within a second or two. The car sounds like it almost starts, then dies. Some owners chase this as a fuel or sensor issue for a while before realizing the key is the cause.

Q: Can I program a spare transponder key for my 2001 Eclipse myself at home?

No DIY sequence on this one. Unlike some domestic vehicles from the same era that had onboard add-a-key procedures using ignition cycles, the 2001 Eclipse transponder system requires external programming equipment to register a new key. Buying a blank online and cutting it yourself gets you a key that turns the lock. It won't start the car until the transponder is enrolled. You need someone with the right tool connected to the OBD port to finish the job.

2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Fernbrook, on a warm evening that had no business being as stressful as it turned out to be, I got a call from a mom in a pediatrician's parking lot. Her kid had spiked a fever during the day.

She'd made the after-hours appointment, filled the waiting time, and now she was standing next to her 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse at 7 p.m. with a prescription ready at the pharmacy by 8 and a car that would not start.

The key was turning. The engine was cranking. Nothing was catching. She wasn't locked out in the traditional sense, which made it more confusing for her, not less.

When I got there I could see the key had taken some damage over time. The head was cracked from being dropped, and that kind of physical stress can compromise the transponder element inside. The immobilizer was reading no valid signal and shutting everything down. Engine cranks, no start, no error light that makes obvious sense to someone who isn't looking for it.

I programmed a replacement key on site using my diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. The immobilizer accepted it cleanly on the first attempt. She was driving before 8.

She got the prescription. Kid was in bed before 9. That's the only number that mattered that night. Not the dealer's wait time, not a tow bill, none of it.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Mitsubishi vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services license (LCO#6792) and carries full insurance. For a 2001 Eclipse specifically, the transponder system requires proper programming equipment to talk to the immobilizer correctly. Not every locksmith carries the tooling for older Mitsubishi setups, and a key that's cut correctly but not programmed will crank the engine and go nowhere.
