2016 Mitsubishi Outlander
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not one of those bait-and-switch locksmiths?

The pattern with scam locksmiths is consistent: low number on the phone, much higher number once you are standing in a parking lot with a sick kid or a dead fob and no options. It shows up in complaints constantly. A real locksmith tells you what the job costs before they start, explains what they are doing, and has a verifiable name, a real license number, and reviews you can look up. Ours are all public.

Q: Will the replacement smart key work exactly like my original factory fob?

Yes. When the new fob is properly programmed to your 2016 Outlander, it communicates with the immobilizer the same way the original does. The engine starts, the doors respond, and the remote functions work as intended. I test every button and every function on site before the job is done.

Q: My 2016 Outlander started once and then died immediately. Could that be a key or immobilizer issue?

Start-then-stall is a known symptom when the immobilizer does not fully recognize the key. The engine fires on the mechanical side but the security system cuts fuel almost immediately. It is worth ruling out before you go hunting for a fuel or ignition problem. On the 2016 Outlander this can happen after a fob with a damaged board gets partially read, or after a battery replacement goes wrong and the key loses its pairing.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 Outlander. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2016 Outlander smart key system does not have an onboard self-programming sequence. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button combination, nothing like that. Registering a new fob to this vehicle requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you bought a fob online, you still need a locksmith or dealer to pair it. The fob itself is just hardware until it is programmed.

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got the call around 7 in the evening. She was in a pediatrician's parking lot in Rancho Santa Fe, near The Bridges, with a sick kid and a 2016 Outlander that would not start.

The fob had been dropped a few times over the past few months. She had already tried the backup start procedure and it was not responding. The dealer was closed. The pharmacy said the prescription would be ready by 8.

I told her I was on my way.

When I got there I opened the fob first, right on the hood where she could watch. The circuit board had a cracked solder joint. That kind of damage happens gradually after repeated drops. The fob sends a signal, the vehicle gets half a handshake, and eventually nothing. It was not a battery issue and it was not the car.

I replaced the fob, connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port, and ran the programming sequence. The vehicle security system accepted the new key on the first attempt. I walked every button, checked the start, and handed it to her confirmed working.

From her call to engine running was 45 minutes. She made the pharmacy by 8 and had her kid home before 9.

The dealer comparison did not come up that night. It rarely matters when the only thing on your mind is getting your kid into bed.

Mitsubishi Outlander Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Mitsubishi vehicles in California?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services locksmith license, LCO#6792, and carries full insurance. For a 2016 Outlander smart key job, that matters more than it sounds. The smart key system on this vehicle talks to the immobilizer through the body control module, and programming requires proper diagnostic equipment and access to Mitsubishi's security protocols. Not every locksmith carries the tooling for this.
