2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a woman parked in the Bressi Ranch area of Carlsbad.
She had one key left for her 2003 Montero Sport, it was worn down to almost nothing, and she was afraid to use it one more time in case it snapped off in the ignition. She'd already called the dealer. They told her to bring it in, said they'd need to verify the vehicle, order the blank, and she was looking at a week out minimum.
She found me instead.
I pulled up to her in the parking lot with my service van, verified the VIN, and got to work cutting a replacement key blade matched to her vehicle. Then came the programming step through the OBD port. The transponder chip in the new key has to be introduced to the immobilizer, otherwise the engine cranks and dies right away. That handshake takes a few minutes with the right diagnostic equipment. No dealer bay required.
Key cut. Chip registered. Engine started clean.
She held the old worn key up next to the new one and said she couldn't believe she'd been using something that beat up. I told her she was lucky it hadn't broken off in there, because that's a whole different conversation.
She paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and her car never left the neighborhood.
