2002 Mitsubishi Montero
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: The dealer says I have to tow the Montero in for a key. Do I really?

No. Dealers say that because it's their process, not because it's the only option. Mitsubishi's dealer network is thinner than most brands, so depending on where you are in Santee, the nearest one might be a real haul. A tow on top of dealer key pricing adds up fast. I come to you, do the programming and cutting on site, and you're driving again without ever moving the car.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership -- registration or title works. I verify the VIN off the dash plate or door jamb sticker to confirm the vehicle and key specs before I start any work. That's standard whether you go to a locksmith or a dealer.

Q: My Montero starts but stalls right away. Is that a key or immobilizer problem?

That specific pattern -- cranks, fires, then dies within a second or two -- points toward the immobilizer not fully accepting the key signal. The engine management system gets just enough to crank but the security system cuts fuel shortly after. On a 2002 Montero, that can happen when the transponder chip inside the key head is damaged, shifted in a cracked housing, or when the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder has a wiring issue.

Q: Can I buy a key blank online and have you program it?

Sometimes, but it depends on the blank. The 2002 Montero needs a key blank with the correct transponder chip already inside the head. A lot of cheap blanks floating around online either have the wrong chip type or no chip at all -- just an empty plastic head. If the chip type is wrong, programming won't take. Bring the blank to me and I'll check it before we go further. If it's compatible, I can work with it.

2002 Mitsubishi Montero Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman near Santee Lakes Area. She had a 2002 Montero that would start some days and not others. She'd already replaced the battery in her car, ruled out fuel, and was staring down a tow to the dealer.

When I pulled up, she showed me the key. The plastic head had split clean along the ring loop, held together with a wrap of electrical tape that had started to peel. She'd been babying it for months.

The issue was right there. The chip inside the key head was shifting position every time she inserted it. Some days it read fine. Other days the immobilizer never got a signal it recognized and the engine would crank without catching. Not a stall after startup, just a no-start that felt like a fuel or electrical problem.

I had a replacement shell with me. Moved her existing chip and circuit board into the fresh housing, verified the blade cut at the car, and tested it through several start cycles right in the carport. Every one of them fired up clean.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her for a full key replacement. I didn't need to replace anything functional. Shell swap, blade check, done on site. She saved a good chunk, and the Montero hasn't given her trouble since.
