2003 Mitsubishi Montero
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2003 Mitsubishi Montero Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked near the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach.

He was visiting from out of town, had one key for his 2003 Montero, and it had gotten to the point where he had to wiggle it and try three or four times before the engine would start. Then one afternoon it just stopped cooperating entirely. The key turned, but the engine cranked and immediately died. That pattern, where it cranks and stalls right away, points straight to the immobilizer not reading the transponder.

He had already called the dealer. They told him the vehicle would need to be towed in, and the earliest they could get to it was the following day. He was not interested in that answer.

I drove out, confirmed the transponder in the key was not communicating properly, and set up to program a fresh key to the vehicle. The Montero immobilizer requires all keys to be registered in a single session, so I had him hand over his original too. Both got written into the system together so neither one would be orphaned.

The whole job was done on the street, no tow, no waiting room. He drove off to finish his trip. The dealer comparison came up when he asked what this would have cost him the other way. I told him to call and ask. He laughed and said he already knew it was more.
