2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does the 2020 Outlander Sport use it?

The smart key on your Outlander Sport is a fob that handles two separate jobs at once. The remote side works your locks and other buttons. The electronic side carries a transponder that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer every time you start the car. If the immobilizer does not get a valid response from the chip in the fob, the engine will not run, even if you turn the key correctly.

Q: My 2020 Outlander Sport is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I start?

Start with the battery. A weak CR2032 is the single most common reason for that warning on this vehicle, and it can cause intermittent failures long before it dies completely. Swap in a fresh one, make sure it is seated flat and making solid contact on both sides, then test all three buttons. If the battery swap does not clear it, your fob may have an emergency backup option to get the car started.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2020 Outlander Sport. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2020 Outlander Sport smart key does not have an onboard self-programming sequence. Registering a new fob requires diagnostic equipment that can communicate with the vehicle's immobilizer. That process is not something you can do with a button sequence or ignition turns. The fob you bought online may be the correct one for your vehicle, and buying it ahead of time is not a problem.

Q: I have one working key for my 2020 Outlander Sport. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Get the spare now. Here is why it matters for this vehicle specifically: if you lose your only key, the job becomes an all-keys-lost procedure. That takes longer, requires additional steps to wipe the immobilizer's memory before registering new fobs, and costs more than a simple add-a-key done while you still have a working key in hand. With one working key present, the process is faster and simpler.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already running calls in Chula Vista when I got a message from a guy in Bonita who had already paid another locksmith to program his 2020 Outlander Sport smart key. The other guy had left without the fob working and kept the money anyway.

He found me through Google Guaranteed and his first question, before he even told me the full story, was how to verify I was actually licensed. Completely fair after what he just went through. I gave him my BSIS license number on the phone and he pulled it up on the state website while we were still talking. That took maybe ninety seconds and seemed to relax him a little.

When I got to him in Bonita, he walked me through what happened. The first locksmith had shown up with a tool that could not communicate with this vehicle's security system, spent close to an hour trying anyway, and collected payment before leaving. The fob was unregistered. The car would not start with it.

I connected my equipment, cleared out the failed programming attempt, and ran a full registration for his fob. Three buttons, clean engine start, doors responding. The whole thing took less time than the other guy had spent failing.

He did not ask about the dealer. I think after two visits from locksmiths in one day, a third trip anywhere was the last thing on his mind.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key blade snapped off inside the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard on-site job. I carry the tools to pull a broken blade from the ignition cylinder without tearing the cylinder apart. Once it is out, I can cut a replacement key blade to your vehicle and, if your Outlander Sport has the smart key setup, handle the electronic registration on site at the same visit. You do not need two separate appointments.
