I got a call out to Millenia in Chula Vista from a guy who had already paid someone else to replace his key on his 2014 Outlander Sport. The engine would crank, catch for about two seconds, then die. Over and over. He'd been told the module was bad and that was that. The other locksmith was gone.

I got there and asked him to try it while I watched. Cranked, fired briefly, then the immobilizer shut it down. That pattern is a tell. The key had been written but not committed. Mitsubishi's immobilizer registration on this generation has a timed confirmation cycle. If you don't let it complete, the key exists in a kind of temporary state. It'll crank the engine because the transponder handshake starts, but the vehicle security system doesn't accept it as a permanently registered key, so it kills fuel almost immediately.

The module was fine. The previous work was just incomplete.

I connected through the OBD port, cleared out the failed key data, and ran a clean registration with the full cycle. Watched the confirmation come through on the tool screen showing the key was permanently stored. Then I had him try it three times in a row. Started clean every time, idled normally, no stall.

He'd already paid once for a job that wasn't finished. I couldn't fix that part. What I could do was make sure this time it actually worked, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him when he called them in a panic.
