He landed back in town, took the shuttle to the airport economy lot, and his 2018 Sonic was sitting exactly where he left it. The fob did nothing. Pressed lock, pressed unlock, walked closer, tried again. Completely dead. Doors locked, car untouched.
He called the dealer first. Earliest appointment was two days out. Then a tow company quoted him a significant amount just to pull it from the lot. After that he found EZ Car Keyz and asked if I could come to him in Spring Valley Village.
I was at the economy lot inside 40 minutes.
First thing I did was pull the emergency blade out of the fob housing and get the door open. Then I checked the fob battery. Dead flat. I swapped in a fresh CR2032, which is what this fob takes, and tested range before touching anything else. The fob started responding immediately, which told me the issue was never the fob itself.
The car, though, needed a resync. After a full battery drain on these, the vehicle security system sometimes stops recognizing the fob on startup even after the battery is replaced. I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port to confirm both keys were still enrolled and ran the resync. Everything came back clean.
Walked every function: lock, unlock, the blade itself in the door cylinder, and remote start was not part of this vehicle's setup so I left it at that. All good.
He drove home the same afternoon. Never needed a tow. Never needed a two-day wait. The fix was a battery and a resync, done in a parking lot on a Tuesday.
The dealer detour would have cost him time he did not have and money he did not need to spend. He saved a good chunk just by calling a mobile tech instead.
