2017 Chevrolet Corvette
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2017 Corvette?

A smart key is a proximity fob. The car detects it passively, meaning you do not insert anything or press a button to be recognized. The vehicle security system is constantly checking for an authorized fob within range. When it finds one, it allows the engine to start. There is also a transponder element inside the fob that communicates with the immobilizer. Both the proximity function and that chip-level communication have to be working for everything to behave normally.

Q: How long does it actually take to get a Corvette key replaced at the dealer versus going mobile?

Dealers on these tend to quote a multi-hour window that rarely matches what the job actually takes. A portion of that is scheduling, intake, and the fact that your car sits in a queue. If the fob needs to be ordered, that adds days or longer. The programming itself on a 2017 Corvette is not a lengthy procedure when the right equipment is connected. When I come to you in Buena Creek or anywhere in Vista, there is no queue.

Q: My 2017 Corvette shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is fine. What is going on?

This is one of the more common complaints on Corvette forums and it catches owners off guard because the fob looks and feels perfectly functional. A fresh battery does not fix a pairing issue. What happens is the fob can lose its enrollment in the vehicle security system. The car stops recognizing the fob as authorized even though nothing is physically wrong with either the fob or the car.

Q: I bought a replacement fob for my 2017 Corvette online. Can I program it myself?

No. There is no owner-accessible self-programming sequence for the 2017 Corvette smart key. The fob has to be enrolled through a professional diagnostic interface connected to the OBD port. That is true whether the fob is new, aftermarket, or a used unit pulled from another car. The fob you bought online is just unprogrammed hardware until someone with the right equipment pairs it to your specific vehicle.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off Bobier Drive, finishing up another job, when a call came in from a Buena Creek address. Guy had a 2017 Corvette sitting in his driveway and a fob that had stopped being recognized by the car. Not dead, not damaged, just not talking to it anymore.

He had already tried the battery. Then he tried it again with a different battery from a different store because he did not trust the first one. The car still came up with a key-not-detected warning every time he walked up to the door. He had given up on the fob and was using the emergency blade insert just to get in and drive it.

When I got there, I connected to the OBD port and pulled up the security module. The fob had lost its pairing. It happens, and it is more common on these than owners expect. The fix was re-enrolling the fob through the programming interface, not swapping any hardware at all.

The whole job took about twenty minutes. He stood next to the car the whole time, watching, asking questions, genuinely interested in how the system worked. After the relearn finished, he tested it himself. Walked away, came back, touched the handle. It woke right up.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a new fob plus labor. He did not need a new fob. He needed the right tool and someone willing to drive out to Buena Creek to use it.

Chevrolet Corvette Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Chevrolet dealer to get a replacement key for my 2017 Corvette?▼

No. A qualified mobile locksmith with the right GM-compatible diagnostic tooling can handle this job at your location. The programming runs through the OBD port, the new fob gets enrolled into the vehicle security system, and you are done without a dealer appointment or a tow. What matters is whether the locksmith actually has the software that supports this vehicle. Some do not, and they will tell you to go to the dealer rather than admit that.
