Yes. The circuit board inside the fob is what holds the programming, not the plastic housing. As long as the board transfers over intact, your programming stays put. We swap the board and the CR2032 into a fresh shell and you are done. No relearn, no security procedure, no starting over. If the blade has worn down from years of ignition use, we can cut a replacement blade at the same time. The whole thing is a bench job and takes maybe ten minutes.

Question 2

What exactly is a remote key and why does the 2002 Corvette use one instead of a plain key?

The remote on your 2002 Corvette is a combined unit: a standard key blade, a transponder chip embedded in the key head, and a four-button remote transmitter running on a CR2032 battery. The transponder side handles the vehicle security system, which checks for an authorized chip signal every time you try to start the car. The remote side handles lock, unlock, and the other buttons wirelessly. Both functions live in the same fob. Cut the blade wrong and it won't turn the ignition. Program the chip wrong and the engine starts then immediately stalls. The remote functions are separate from starting the car entirely - the car will run without the remote side working, but not without the chip side.

My Corvette is showing a theft deterrent warning on the dash. What does that mean and what do I do?

That warning means the vehicle security system did not get a clean read from the transponder in your key. First thing to try: use your spare if you have one. If the spare starts it clean, the issue is your primary key's chip or the key head itself.

If you only have one key, there is a timed relearn procedure built into the C5 that you can try without any tools. Turn the ignition to the ON position without cranking the engine. Watch the security light. It will stay on for roughly ten minutes, then go out. At that point, turn the key off, wait a few seconds, and try to start. Some owners on Corvette forums report this clears intermittent security faults caused by a worn key or a brief communication hiccup.

If it keeps coming back, or if the car won't complete the relearn at all, the problem is more likely a worn key transponder, a failing ignition cylinder that isn't reading the chip reliably, or something deeper in the security module. That is when you call me out and I diagnose it on site.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a technician?

The C5 Corvette has an onboard remote programming procedure that works when you already have at least one functional, recognized remote in hand. With a working fob present, the process cycles through the vehicle's own programming mode and lets you add a second remote without any external equipment. If you still have a working original fob, it is worth trying the onboard sequence first.

All-keys-lost is a different story. If you have no working fob at all, the onboard procedure won't start and you need a technician with the right equipment to get back in and re-register remotes from scratch.

One other thing: the fob you bought online needs to match the factory FCC ID for your vehicle. There are several GM fobs from this era that look nearly identical but are not interchangeable. Check the FCC ID on the back of your original against what you ordered before assuming it will work.

My Corvette starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working completely. Do I need a whole new fob?

Not necessarily. The most common cause on these is a dead CR2032. The transponder that lets the car start is passive and doesn't use the battery, so a completely dead cell kills the remote functions while leaving the start function untouched. Swap the battery, reseat it so the contacts are making clean contact, and test all four buttons.

If a fresh battery doesn't bring it back, the next suspect is the board inside the fob. These are over twenty years old now and the contacts corrode. If the board is done, we transfer your programming to a new shell and remote unit. What you almost never need is to start the programming process over from zero just because the remote side failed.
