2021 Chevrolet Corvette
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement fob last on a 2021 Corvette?

The electronics inside a properly programmed fob are durable. Realistically, years of normal use before anything electronic gives out. The CR2450 battery is the one thing that needs periodic attention, and on a seven-button fob that's seeing daily use, most owners replace it every one to two years before it gets to the point of causing issues. The physical shell tends to go before the board does.

Q: What if the replacement fob stops working after a few weeks?

We come back. That's it. Every key we program is covered. If it loses remote function, stops starting the car, or develops any problem under normal use, we fix it or replace it. We test every button and confirm the car starts before we leave the job. If something goes sideways after that, call us.

Q: The previous owner only handed me one fob when I bought this Corvette. Can a second one be added without erasing the first?

Yes, and this is actually one of the more common calls I get on used Corvette purchases. Adding a second fob to the 2021 Corvette requires diagnostic equipment, not a button sequence or ignition-turn trick. But adding a key does not mean wiping the existing one. As long as the BCM is in a clean state and the original fob is present during the process, both can be enrolled and active at the same time.

Q: My Corvette fob works fine for remote lock and unlock but the car is throwing a security warning on the dash. Is the fob the problem?

Probably not the fob itself. If remote functions are working normally, the fob is communicating fine. A security warning that appears independently usually points to something in the vehicle's immobilizer or body control module, not the key transmitter. This comes up on C8 Corvettes after battery disconnects, after jump-starts, or when the BCM has a stored fault from a previous event. It can also show up if someone attempted a programming job that didn't finish cleanly.

2021 Chevrolet Corvette Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A body shop in Carlsbad called me about a 2021 Corvette that was stuck in their lot over in the Bressi Ranch area. They had already brought in another locksmith for a key replacement. That locksmith hit a key-not-detected warning partway through, the programming sequence didn't complete, and a security fault message appeared on the dash. He packed up and told them to tow it to the dealer.

The body shop called me.

When I got there, the OBD port was partially locked out from the incomplete attempt. That's the part that stops a lot of people. If the BCM flags a security fault mid-sequence and you can't get back in through the port, the standard approach is just done. But I had my bench programmer with me, which lets me read and write directly to the module without needing the port to cooperate.

I pulled the BCM data, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the security handshake from scratch. Once the module was clean, the new fob registered on the first sequence. Tested every button, confirmed remote lock and unlock, verified the car started and the security warning was gone. Showed the body shop what the original failed attempt had done so they'd understand what to watch for if it came up again.

The whole job took about an hour and a half. Longer than a clean replacement, but it was done that afternoon. The alternative was a flatbed, a multi-day dealer wait, and a bill that would have been a fraction of the headache they already had.

I carry the bench tools because jobs like this one are exactly why they exist.

Chevrolet Corvette Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket fobs on the 2021 Corvette?▼

We use professional-grade fobs sourced from tested suppliers, not the random listings you find on Amazon. The difference matters on this car. The 2021 Corvette's security system is picky about what it will accept during programming, and a low-quality fob can fail mid-sequence or pair initially and then drop out within days. Forum threads on Corvette-specific communities are full of owners who went the cheap route and ended up paying twice.
