A body shop in Carlsbad called me about a 2021 Corvette that was stuck in their lot over in the Bressi Ranch area. They had already brought in another locksmith for a key replacement. That locksmith hit a key-not-detected warning partway through, the programming sequence didn't complete, and a security fault message appeared on the dash. He packed up and told them to tow it to the dealer.
The body shop called me.
When I got there, the OBD port was partially locked out from the incomplete attempt. That's the part that stops a lot of people. If the BCM flags a security fault mid-sequence and you can't get back in through the port, the standard approach is just done. But I had my bench programmer with me, which lets me read and write directly to the module without needing the port to cooperate.
I pulled the BCM data, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the security handshake from scratch. Once the module was clean, the new fob registered on the first sequence. Tested every button, confirmed remote lock and unlock, verified the car started and the security warning was gone. Showed the body shop what the original failed attempt had done so they'd understand what to watch for if it came up again.
The whole job took about an hour and a half. Longer than a clean replacement, but it was done that afternoon. The alternative was a flatbed, a multi-day dealer wait, and a bill that would have been a fraction of the headache they already had.
