2007 Chevrolet Corvette Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near the Naval Base Area in Coronado, I got a call from a Corvette owner who was convinced she had an electrical gremlin. The car would start in the morning, run fine, and then by the afternoon it would crank and immediately die. The DIC was showing a theft deterrent warning. She'd already been to a shop. Not a dealership, just a general shop that said they couldn't find anything wrong with the electrical system. They weren't wrong exactly. The wiring was fine.
She mentioned almost as an aside that she'd had a replacement key made a couple of weeks before the stalling started. I asked who did it. A locksmith she found online, not local.
That told me most of what I needed to know before I even touched the car.
I pulled up to her place and she had the fob sitting on the center console like it was in timeout. I put my equipment on the OBD port and read what the system had stored. The immobilizer had logged repeated authentication failures, not first-cycle failures, later-cycle ones. Exactly what you see when the transponder chip in the key is a close match to the correct type but not the right one. Some chips will pass the initial enrollment and even the first few starts, but the vehicle's security system runs a deeper verification over subsequent drive cycles. A mismatched chip doesn't survive that test.
I programmed a new fob with the correct transponder matched to her vehicle. Swapped the CR2032 while I was in there because it was sitting at the low end anyway, and she'd already been chasing intermittent detection issues on top of the stalling. No sense leaving a marginal battery in a key we just fixed.
She watched the whole thing from her front step, arms crossed, still skeptical. First start after programming, clean. No warning. She let it idle for a few minutes waiting for the DIC to say something. It didn't.
The dealer had quoted her a figure she described as "a lot" to diagnose and replace. She saved a good chunk coming to me instead, and I did it in her driveway.
