A guy out near the Santee Lakes Area called me on a Saturday evening. He had his 1996 Corvette parked at a spot near the lake and his only key had snapped off at the bow. Not bent, not worn. Snapped clean, half in the lock cylinder, half in his hand.

He had already tried the folded-paper trick someone told him about. Did not work. He was looking at a tow, a Monday dealer appointment, and whatever that was going to cost him.

I was already running a job in Santee so I was maybe twelve minutes out. I carry key blanks for older domestic vehicles, including the profile that fits the C4-generation Corvette lock cylinder. When I got there, I extracted the broken piece from the door lock, decoded the cylinder, and cut a replacement key on site.

He turned it over in his hand like he expected it not to work. Then he tried it in the door. Then the ignition. Both turned clean on the first try.

He said he figured he was spending the night waiting for a tow. Ended up driving home before dark. The dealer comparison never even came up. He just kept saying he did not know this was something a mobile locksmith could handle in a parking lot.
