2023 Chevrolet Traverse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a smart key and why does my 2023 Traverse need one specifically?

Your 2023 Traverse fob is more than a remote. There's a transponder chip inside that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer every time you try to start the car. If the chip isn't recognized, the engine won't run, full stop. The fob also handles your remote lock and unlock functions across its 5 buttons. What this means practically: you can't just buy a blank fob online and call it done.

Q: What equipment does it actually take to program a 2023 Traverse smart key?

This is a newer GM platform, so it takes more than a basic OBD tool. Programming a smart key on a 2023 Traverse requires professional diagnostic equipment with current GM software, CAN-FD protocol support, and the ability to handle security access for all-keys-lost situations if needed. For an all-keys-lost job, the process involves security code retrieval and a timed immobilizer reset, so you're looking at more time on site than a simple add-a-key.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2023 Traverse. Can I program it myself?

No. There is no onboard self-programming sequence for the 2023 Traverse smart key system. The ignition-turn relearn procedures that work on older GM vehicles with traditional transponder keys don't apply here. Pairing a new smart fob to this vehicle requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you already bought the fob, bring it to me and I can program it on site, which saves you the cost of the fob itself.

Q: My 2023 Traverse fob works fine most of the time but randomly fails to start the car. What's going on?

Intermittent failures on this generation are worth diagnosing carefully before you replace anything. A few possibilities worth ruling out in order. Battery first, even if it seems fine. The CR2032 in the factory fob can read acceptable voltage but still deliver inconsistent signal under load. Swap it for a fresh one and use a name-brand cell. If the battery checks out, look at whether the no-start is tied to a specific shifter position or a specific door.

2023 Chevrolet Traverse Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was about 5:50 in the morning when my phone rang. Guy was already at his job site in Downtown Escondido, shift starting at 6, and his 2023 Traverse smart fob had given out on him overnight.

Not a crack, not a lost key, just completely unresponsive. The vehicle wouldn't respond to the fob at all. He used the emergency blade inside the fob to get the door open, but the car wouldn't start. That key-not-detected warning sat there on the dash and wouldn't clear.

He was calm about it, but you could hear what was underneath. The foreman was already at the gate.

I was stocked and out the door fast. Got to the site in under 20 minutes. The fob battery was the first thing I checked, and it wasn't the problem. The fob itself had failed, not the battery, not the door handle sensor, not anything on the vehicle side. I had the right replacement fob in the van, programmed it to the Traverse on site using my diagnostic equipment, synced the new key to the immobilizer, and verified every button and the start function before I called it done. The whole hands-on portion ran about 25 to 30 minutes.

He was through the gate before 6:30. I handed him a note with the battery replacement interval so he wouldn't end up in this same spot down the road.

The dealer would have needed a tow, an appointment, and most of a workday. That's not a knock, it's just the reality of what a 6am mobile call can solve that a service department can't.

Chevrolet Traverse Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to watch for. First, they won't give you a firm total price for your specific vehicle on the phone. Second, they show up and either don't have the right equipment for a 2023 Traverse smart key or stall once they're in your driveway. Third, fees start multiplying after they've already started the job. A real locksmith tells you one price before anything begins.
