2011 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement transponder key last on my Express?

A long time, with normal use. The transponder inside the key head is passive - no battery, no moving parts - so it doesn't wear out the way a fob does. The blade is the part that takes the most abuse. If the plastic key head cracks or the bow breaks, the internals can usually be transferred to a new key shell without any reprogramming, as long as the chip is undamaged.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me and I come back. That's the short version. The longer version: before I leave any job, I test the start multiple times and confirm the van runs consistently. If something develops after the fact under normal use, that's on me to fix or replace. I've heard enough stories from van owners who paid for a key that worked twice and then got ghosted by whoever made it.

Q: I have one working key for my Express. Can I add a spare without going to the dealer?

Yes, and this is one of the better situations to be in with a vehicle like this. The 2011 Express transponder system allows a spare key to be added using an onboard relearn procedure when you have a working key in hand. It doesn't always require a programmer. The process uses the existing working key to put the system into a learn mode so it can accept a new one.

Q: My Express cranks but won't stay running. Could it be the transponder key?

That crank-and-die pattern is one of the more common signs that the immobilizer isn't recognizing the key. The engine starts because fuel and spark are briefly present, then the security system cuts them. It's worth checking whether a key-not-detected or security warning appears on the dash when this happens.

2011 Chevrolet Express Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in Buena Creek on a Wednesday morning. He runs a small delivery route out of Vista and his 2011 Express was his whole operation.

He'd had a spare key made at a hardware store a few months back - the blade fit, the doors opened, but every time he tried to start the van, it cranked and died. Classic transponder mismatch. He'd been ignoring it because his original key still worked. Then the original key broke off in the ignition.

So now he had a van that wouldn't start, a useless hardware store copy, and deliveries stacking up.

I pulled up to his place off Emerald Drive and got a look at the situation. The broken key portion was still in the cylinder, so that came first - extracted it without pulling the whole lock. Then I cut a new key blade to match the vehicle and enrolled the transponder so the immobilizer would recognize it. Tested the start. Solid.

While I had everything out I also properly enrolled the hardware store key he already had. That one just needed the transponder registered - the cut was actually fine. He walked away with two working keys instead of one.

The dealer had told him they'd need the van towed in and could look at it Thursday at the earliest. He did the math on a missed day of deliveries and called me instead. I was done before lunch.

Chevrolet Express Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 2011 Chevrolet Express?▼

For a transponder key like the one on the Express, what matters most is that the chip type inside the key head is correct for the vehicle and that the blade is cut accurately. We source keys from professional-grade suppliers, not the kind of blanks you find on Amazon. The difference between a quality aftermarket transponder key and OEM on a vehicle like this is minimal in real-world use.
