These remotes have a real-world effective range that varies based on environment, and a weak battery can cut that range down to almost nothing before it fails completely.

If a new battery doesn't bring the remote back, the issue might be the receiver in the vehicle or a damaged board inside the key housing, especially if there are any visible cracks. That's worth having looked at before spending money on a full replacement.
