When a 2016 Chevrolet Express key is done wrong, the car tells you about it. You get a "service theft deterrent" message on the dash. The engine cranks but cuts fuel after two seconds. The remote locks but won't unlock. Or worst case, the fob programs initially but the immobilizer rejects it after a few drive cycles and you're stranded again.
A customer at the coin laundry in Del Mar had a key made by another locksmith for her Express that triggered "service theft deterrent" after about a week. It would start in the morning but by evening the message would pop up and the engine would die. She thought the car had an electrical problem, but it didn't. The key was the problem.
The other locksmith had used the wrong chip generation. Her Express needs the correct ID46 transponder variant to pass GM's deeper security verification over multiple start cycles. A close-but-wrong chip passes the initial learn but fails later. I used my VVDI2 to read the bad key's chip, confirmed it was incorrect, and programmed a new key with the right ID46 matched to her car's FCC ID CWTWB1U751. Her fob also had a weak CR1620 or CR2032 battery contributing to intermittent detection failure. I swapped that too so she wasn't chasing two problems at once.
The replacement I made has been working for months and cost her $185. Dealer would have charged $395. The difference between a key that works and a key that works for a week is the chip inside it.
