2016 Chevrolet Express Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Torrey Pines, near the trail parking area off Torrey Pines Road, I got a call from a guy who runs a small service operation and uses an Express as his work van. He had a spare key, but the remote portion had stopped working months ago. He'd been ignoring it, using the blade to get in manually, until the day he locked the fob inside while unloading and had to call me.
When I got there, the blade on the spare still turned the ignition fine. The issue was the remote half of the remote-head key. He assumed the fob was dead and just needed programming again.
I popped the back. The CR1620 inside was so corroded at the positive contact that it had left a faint green ring on the cell itself. The battery had probably been in there since before he bought the van secondhand. Swapped it out with a fresh CR1620 from my kit, cleaned the contact, and seated it correctly.
Before assuming anything was wrong with the fob's programming, I tested range on all three buttons standing about 20 feet from the van. Lock, unlock, and panic all came back. No reprogramming needed at all. The van had never forgotten the key - the key just hadn't been powered.
He laughed and said he'd been manually locking himself out for about four months over a battery he didn't know to replace. I checked the primary key too while I was there, and that CR1620 was getting weak. Swapped that one preemptively.
Two batteries, one service call. He didn't need a dealer trip or a new key, just someone who showed up and started with the simple thing first.
