2013 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2013 Chevrolet Express Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Bressi Ranch, I got a call from a guy who runs a small contracting crew. His 2013 Express was sitting in the lot behind his shop, dead stop, no working key.

He'd had a copy made at a hardware store months back when the original started looking rough. The copy turned the lock fine but the van wouldn't stay running. He figured it was a fuel issue and started chasing that rabbit for a while.

By the time he called me, he'd already talked to a shop about the fuel system. Nothing wrong with the fuel system. I asked him one question: was the copy key made at a hardware store or by someone with the right equipment. He went quiet for a second.

I came out with a replacement key blank that carries the correct transponder for this application, cut it to the van on site using the existing lock as reference, and programmed the chip through the OBD port. First turn, it started and stayed running. He stood there for a moment just watching the idle.

The hardware store copy had the right cuts but no chip. The van was doing exactly what it was supposed to do when it sees a key it doesn't recognize. The whole job was done in his lot, no tow, no dealer wait, for a fraction of what the dealer had quoted when he called them weeks earlier.
