My key shell is cracking apart. Can you swap it without reprogramming everything?

A transponder key looks like a standard metal key but carries a small chip inside the plastic head. When you turn the key in the ignition, the vehicle reads that chip. If the chip isn't recognized, the engine will crank but the immobilizer cuts it off within a couple of seconds. No communication, no start.

The 2018 Express uses this system as its theft deterrent. The key has to be both cut correctly to turn the cylinder and programmed correctly so the immobilizer accepts it. A perfectly cut key with no programming, or a programmed key with the wrong cut, both fail in different ways. You need both right at the same time.

There's no remote, no fob, no buttons on this key. It's a turn-key only. That's actually what makes it less complicated in some ways: the whole job is about the blade cut and the transponder learn, nothing else.

My dash is showing a security warning and the Express won't start. What do I do?

Try your spare key first. If you have one that's known to work, that tells you immediately whether the issue is with the key or with something deeper.

If you only have one key and it's suddenly not being recognized, there's an onboard relearn sequence you can attempt on these vans: turn the key to the ON position without cranking, watch the security indicator light, and wait until it stops flashing and goes out. That can take around 10 minutes. Once the light goes out, turn the key off, wait a few seconds, and try to start normally.

That process works when the system just needs to re-sync with a key it already knows. It won't work if the key's chip has failed, if the ignition cylinder is worn to the point it can't read the chip properly, or if there's a communication problem in the security system. If the light comes back and the van still won't start, that's when you need a tech with a scanner to read what the system is actually seeing.

I need a second key made for my Express. Do I have to go to a dealer, or can this be done on site?

No dealer trip needed. Adding a key to the 2018 Express is a standard mobile job.
