I got a call from a woman in Bressi Ranch, over near the newer part of the neighborhood where the houses back up to the business park.
She had a 2007 Chevrolet Express, the full-size cargo van, and her flip key had split right at the hinge. The blade would pop out but wobble instead of locking into position, and the plastic shell was cracked through to the battery compartment. She'd already been to the dealer. They quoted her a full replacement, cut and programmed, and told her to expect a wait on the part.
What they didn't tell her was that the electronics inside were still working fine.
I pulled up to her garage and she handed me the fob in pieces, more or less. The factory remote with the dealer part number on the slip, the cracked shell, and her registration like she was prepared for an argument. I told her to relax.
The circuit board had no corrosion. The chip carrier was seated fine. The blade had some wear but was still accurate. I verified the cut with my decoder against the lock, moved her board and chip into a fresh shell, pressed the blade in, and tested the buttons. Locks, unlocks, the other two buttons, ignition start. Everything came back clean. She stood there watching the whole thing happen on the hood of the van, maybe eight minutes of actual work.
The dealer route would have had her waiting on a part order and paying for a full replacement she didn't need. She paid a fraction of that, right in her own driveway.
