2011 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2011 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Moonlight Beach parking lot, late afternoon, a woman waving me down from next to a white full-size van. She drove beach shuttle runs out of Encinitas and had been operating on one key for longer than she could remember.

The original was worn down to where she had to jiggle it just right to get the van to turn over, and she finally decided to get a spare before she ended up stranded between stops.

She assumed the dealer was the only path. That assumption is almost universal with these vans because the transponder key looks simple from the outside, just a plain key head with no buttons, and people figure if it has a chip inside it must be dealer territory only.

I cut a replacement key to match her ignition and door lock, then ran the programming sequence through the OBD port. The van's immobilizer accepted the new key on the first try. I handed it to her and had her test it herself, cold ignition, no drama. She did it twice just to be sure.

The dealer visit would have meant dropping the van off, waiting for a service slot, and going without it for however long that took. A shuttle driver can't have a van sitting at a dealership for a day and a half. The whole job was done in the parking lot in under forty minutes, and she was back on her route.

She asked if I could also do something about the worn original. I told her honestly: if the key itself is the problem, a fresh-cut copy on the same blade profile will perform better than the worn one. She kept the new key as her daily and put the old one in the glovebox as the backup, which is exactly backwards from how most people do it, but it made sense for her situation.
