2005 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does it actually take to make a replacement key on site?

On a 2005 Savana with a mechanical key, the job is decoding and cutting. If I can decode from the door lock cylinder, I do not even need the original key present. Cutting and fitting usually runs 15 to 20 minutes at the van. No countdown timers, no security relearn cycles, no waiting for modules to talk to each other.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for this van?

Yes, and it is not close. The cutting itself takes about the same amount of time anywhere, but the dealer route layers on towing, intake, a repair order queue, and waiting for a tech to free up. One Savana owner I spoke with was told to bring the van in and expect it to sit for most of the day. The actual work was under half an hour once someone got to it.

Q: My Savana has two different locks: the ignition and the door. Do I need a key that works both?

On a 2005 Savana, the ignition and door locks are typically cut to the same key code from the factory, so one key should work both. That said, on a van this age, it is worth checking. If a previous owner had a cylinder replaced or rekeyed at some point, the locks may no longer match.

Q: The original key is worn down and sometimes does not turn the ignition. Do I need a new cylinder or just a new key?

Usually just a new key, cut to the original profile. A worn key develops a rounded-off edge that does not lift the tumblers cleanly, which makes the cylinder feel stiff or sticky. Cut a fresh key to the correct depths and most ignitions on these vans turn fine again. Where it gets more involved is if the cylinder itself is worn or damaged.

2005 GMC Savana Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Cardiff-by-the-Sea who runs a small trade operation and keeps a 2005 Savana as his work van.

The key had snapped off in the door lock, which is a thing that happens on a van this age when the blade gets thin from years of daily use. He had a spare, but it was so worn it barely turned the ignition anymore, and the broken piece was still sitting in the door cylinder.

He called the dealer first. They told him to have it towed in and that they'd need to look at the cylinder to see if it needed replacing. He was looking at a tow bill plus labor plus however long they needed the van, which for a guy who loads that thing up five mornings a week was not a workable answer.

I drove out to him in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, extracted the broken piece from the door cylinder, decoded the cut off the lock, and made him two fresh keys on site. The door lock turned smooth again. Both keys worked the ignition on the first try.

He stood there for a second and said something like, "That's it?" That's it.

No tow. No waiting room. No repair order. The van didn't leave Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and he was back to his schedule before noon.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my Savana after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments keep limited hours, and a 2005 Savana is not a priority walk-in at a GM shop on a Saturday afternoon. If your only key breaks on a Friday evening, you are looking at the van sitting until Monday at the earliest under the dealer route. I work outside of standard dealer hours. One call gets you on the schedule, often the same evening or the following morning.
