2020 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over in the Naval Base Area in Coronado, I got a call from someone running a small fleet of Savanas. Not a big operation, just a few cargo vans used for deliveries on and around the base. One of them wouldn't start on a Monday morning. The driver turned the key, engine cranked fine, then died within a couple of seconds. Kept doing it every time.
They assumed it was a fuel issue and nearly had it towed to a shop.
I got there and the first thing I did was test the key. The van was cranking, which told me the battery was good and the starter was working. That crank-and-die pattern on a Savana with a transponder key points one direction before you start pulling fuel system components apart. I put a transponder reader on it and confirmed the key wasn't being recognized by the immobilizer.
Cut and programmed a new transponder key on site, right in the lot. Tested it through several start cycles. Van fired and stayed running every time.
The driver told me the original key had been dropped and run over by a cart a few weeks back. The blade still worked to turn the ignition, so nobody connected the damage to the no-start. But the chip inside had taken enough of a hit to fail intermittently before it quit entirely.
They kept the new key and I left them with a spare so the next Monday morning doesn't go the same way. Dealer was never part of the conversation.
