1999 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the key work actually take once you're at my vehicle?

On a 1999 Savana with a mechanical key, it's a short visit. If I have the key code, cutting takes minutes. If the code is gone and I need to decode the lock cylinder, add a little time for that step, but we're still talking a single visit well under an hour. There's no relearn cycle, no timed security sequence, no waiting for a module to finish. Cut, test in the door, test in the ignition, done.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for one of these vans?

Yes, and by a wide margin on a vehicle like this. A dealer has to write up a repair order, find the key code through their system, order or locate a blank if they don't stock it for a van this age, and fit it into a tech's schedule. That's a half-day minimum at most shops, sometimes longer if the key blank isn't on the shelf.

Q: My ignition is stiff and the key is hard to turn. Is that a key problem or something else?

On a van this age, a stiff ignition is almost always the cylinder wearing out, not the key itself. The wafers inside the cylinder wear unevenly over time, especially on a high-use work vehicle. A worn key can accelerate that, but cutting a fresh key to the correct depth specs often makes a noticeable difference before the cylinder actually needs replacing. Worth trying a fresh cut first before going straight to a cylinder replacement.

Q: I lost the only key to my 1999 Savana. Can you still make one without it?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a mechanical key vehicle is a standard locksmith job. Two ways to handle it: decode the door lock cylinder to determine the correct cut, or trace the key code through the VIN if the vehicle's records are available. Either method gets us to the right cut without needing the original. Bring proof of ownership and I can have you back in the van the same day.

1999 GMC Savana Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Richland neighborhood of San Marcos, I got a call from a property manager who ran maintenance operations for a townhouse complex. The 1999 GMC Savana was her daily driver between buildings, and she needed three working keys: one for herself and two for the maintenance crew.

She had one worn original. The dealer quoted her a number per key, times three, and told her to leave the van for the better part of a day. She's the person everyone calls when something breaks on the property. She couldn't disappear for half a day over keys.

I met her at the complex late that afternoon. The job was simple once I was there: decode the existing key, cut three new metal keys to match, test each one in the ignition and the door locks. No modules, no programming cycles, no countdown timers. Just good cuts confirmed in the hardware.

She handled two tenant calls while I worked. By the time she wrapped the second call, all three keys were tested, labeled for her crew, and she was back in motion. Fraction of what the dealer wanted, and her van never left the parking lot.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my Savana after hours or on the weekend?▼

That's actually where a mobile locksmith makes the most sense for a van like this. The 1999 Savana takes a standard metal key - no parts to order, no programming window to schedule around. I carry blank stock that fits these and a decoder for the lock cylinders. After hours, weekend, early morning before a job site opens - none of that changes what the work actually requires. One call and we figure out a time that works.
