How long does the GMC dealer actually take for a key fob replacement on a 2007 Savana?

The wait is everything around that: getting a service appointment, writing up the repair order, waiting for the fob if it's not in stock, and billing it out in labor blocks.

For a full-size van like the Savana, dealers don't always have the fob sitting on a shelf. If they have to order it, you're looking at a day or two just for the part. Then you schedule. Then you wait for a tech window. A job that takes fifteen minutes of real work can eat a full business day when you run it through dealer infrastructure.

What kind of key does the 2007 GMC Savana use?

It's not the technology. It's the workflow. A dealer service department runs on appointments, repair orders, tech assignments, and labor billing. The actual programming is quick. The rest is scheduling overhead. Mobile is different because the only job I'm doing is your key. I drive to you, I do the work, I leave. There's no service lane queue, no waiting on a tech to finish another job, no billing department hold. The 2007 Savana is also old enough that it doesn't require any special gateway authorization step, which simplifies things further compared to newer vehicles.

This one actually has a self-programming mode built in. The general process involves using the working key to cycle the vehicle into programming mode through the OBD port area or an ignition sequence, then presenting the new fob. GM used an onboard add-a-key method on a lot of vehicles from this era, and the Savana falls in that window.

That said, there are a few catches. You need at least one working programmed key to initiate the sequence. The replacement fob has to match the correct factory FCC ID for the vehicle, otherwise it won't take. And if anything goes sideways mid-sequence, you can exit programming mode and need to start over.

All-keys-lost, meaning zero working fobs, requires a scan tool and professional equipment. No ignition sequence gets you out of that one.

The fob range on my 2007 Savana has gotten really short. Is the fob failing?

Start with the CR2032. A battery that reads low on a meter can still cause short range and inconsistent button response before it fully dies. Swap it first, make sure the new cell is seated flat with good contact, and retest from a normal distance.

If range is still short after a fresh battery, the fob's internal antenna or board may have taken damage, especially if it's been dropped, submerged, or sat in a hot vehicle for years. At that point the fob itself is the problem and a replacement needs to be programmed in.

One other thing: the receiver on the vehicle can also degrade, though that's less common. If a brand-new programmed fob also has short range, that's the direction to look.
