VATS Resistor Key Era
Mid-90s VATS era. Vehicle Anti-Theft System used a resistor pellet embedded in the key blade, not a transponder chip. 15 possible resistance values. The wrong resistance equals immediate ignition lockout for several minutes.
Passlock I Transition
Transition years 1997-1999 as GM phased in PK3 immobilizer. Some builds carry VATS, others PK3. We identify on the truck before cutting.
Optional Keyless Entry Remote
Late-model 2000-2001 Safaris run pure PK3 with Philips ID46 transponder. Same workflow as Jimmy and Envoy from the same era.

VATS Resistance Read Failures
After 25-plus years, the VATS resistor in old Safari keys drifts out of spec. The ignition reads the wrong value and locks out for 4 minutes. We measure your existing key on a multimeter and cut a fresh blank to match before programming.
PK3 Immobilizer Sync Loss (2000+)
Late-model Safari BCMs lose sync after 25 years. Dash lights, no crank. We re-pair on-site with the PIN read.
Worn Ignition Cylinders
Long-service Safari cylinders wear. Fresh-cut keys buy time, but if the cylinder is shot we tell you before cutting.
Wrong Chip Diagnosis on Late Builds
Some shops try Texas 4D on 2001 Safaris. Wrong. Philips ID46 only on PK3 builds. Wrong chip equals dead minivan.
Can You Program a Safari Key in Your Driveway?
No on VATS. The resistance value has to be cut to match, then the blade has to be cut to your specific lock code. Both require shop equipment.
Sort of on PK3. If you have two existing working keys, GM's two-key on-board procedure adds a third. New key still needs to be cut and chip-programmed first by a locksmith.

Safari Trivia
The Safari minivan ran from 1985 through 2005 as GMC's twin of the Chevy Astro, sharing the M-body platform with rear-wheel-drive and optional all-wheel-drive. The transition from VATS resistor pellets to PK3 transponder happened mid-cycle around 1997-1999, which is why same-year Safaris sometimes have different key systems depending on production date. The last Safaris in 2000-2001 ran the same Philips ID46 chip that GM kept using through the mid-2010s.
