2009 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for this van?

Call with your year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the correct key blank for your 2009 Savana and give you a price before I leave. When I arrive, I verify ownership, pull the VIN, cut the key to your vehicle, program the transponder through the OBD port, and test it in the ignition and door locks. The whole job happens at the van. No towing, no waiting room, no leaving it overnight.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. That's it. I pull the VIN from the dash or the door jamb to confirm the key specs. Same documents the dealer will ask for, except you're standing next to your van in Eastlake instead of sitting in a service waiting room somewhere across town. If you don't have registration handy, a title works.

Q: My 2009 Savana cranks fine but won't start. Could it be the transponder key?

Yes, that's one of the classic signs. If the engine cranks normally and then dies immediately, or cranks and never fires at all, the vehicle security system may not be reading the chip in the key. It's worth checking the key first before going after fuel or ignition components. A worn key that's been on a heavy keychain for years can have a damaged chip even if the blade still looks fine.

Q: I have a spare key for my Savana but it was never programmed. Can you add it without erasing my working key?

Yes. Adding a second transponder key to the Savana does not wipe the existing programmed key. Both get stored and both work. This is actually one of the smarter calls an owner can make before losing the only working key, because an all-keys-lost situation on these vans takes longer and costs more than a simple add-a-key job.

2009 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in the Eastlake area of Chula Vista. He was running a small delivery route out of his 2009 GMC Savana and had snapped his only key in the ignition cylinder. Not bent, not worn. Snapped clean, with part of it still sitting in the barrel.

He had already called one shop that told him it was a two-day job minimum. Then he called the dealer, who wanted the van towed in before they would even quote him. He had stops to make that afternoon.

I pulled up to the van, extracted the broken section from the cylinder without pulling the whole column, and decoded the cut from the lock itself. Cut a new key blank to match, programmed the transponder to the vehicle through the OBD port, and tested it in the ignition and both door locks.

He was back on his route inside of an hour. The dealer comparison didn't even come up. He just needed the van running, and that's what happened.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2009 GMC Savana somewhere for a key replacement?▼

No. I come to wherever the van is. Driveway, parking lot, job site, doesn't matter. The 2009 Savana key gets cut and programmed on site with mobile equipment. Dealers will ask you to tow the vehicle in if you have no working key, and on a full-size van that can mean a flatbed, a wait for an available tech, and a timeline that stretches into the next day. I handle the cut and the transponder programming at the vehicle.
