2022 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2022 GMC Savana use?

It's a remote, which means it's a fob with buttons plus a transponder chip inside. The chip has to be registered to your vehicle through the body control module before the engine will start. The fob itself handles remote lock and unlock through the other buttons. The two functions, starting the van and operating the buttons remotely, run through the same physical fob but are handled separately during programming. Both have to be confirmed working before the job is done.

Q: Why does key programming take so long at the dealer?

It's not the tech's fault and it's not the tool's fault. The programming procedure is genuinely quick when someone sits down and runs it. The delay is dealership workflow: service write-up, parts availability, tech scheduling, and billing structure. Some shops won't let a tech touch a key job without a full diagnostic appointment on the books, which adds time and cost even when nothing is actually wrong with the vehicle.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tool?

You need a tool. The 2022 Savana does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for adding fobs. That kind of ignition-turn relearn went away on most GM products well before this generation. Programming requires a diagnostic device that can communicate with the body control module through the OBD port. If you bought a fob online, that's fine, it can still be used, but someone with the right equipment needs to register it.

Q: What happens if I lose all keys to the Savana? Is that a bigger job?

It's a more involved job, but it's done regularly. All-keys-lost means the body control module has no active key to reference, so the process requires a full key relearn rather than just adding to an existing list. The old key IDs get cleared and new ones are written in. It takes longer than a simple spare, and it does require the right diagnostic equipment, but it's a standard mobile job. No flatbed, no dealer required.

2022 GMC Savana Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Bressi Ranch, I met a property manager who runs a townhouse complex and uses her 2022 GMC Savana as her daily work vehicle, moving between properties all day. She needed a spare for herself and two more for her maintenance crew. Three keys total.

The dealer quote had stopped her cold. Three keys at dealer rates, plus cutting, plus whatever they were going to charge for the appointment itself. The math was rough, and she couldn't leave the van there for hours because she's the one everyone calls when something breaks on site.

She had two tenant calls come in while I was working. She handled both from the parking lot, phone up, walking between her office and the van, while I ran through the programming sequence on the OBD port. I pulled a BCM data backup first before going into a multi-key write. It's a habit I keep on any job where I'm programming three or more keys in sequence, because if something interrupts the last one, I want a clean restore point rather than a locked-out module.

Each fob got tested individually. Lock, unlock, the other two buttons, and I confirmed the van started on each one before handing it over. She had them labeled for her crew before I packed up.

Three keys, one parking lot visit, and she drove off to her next property with everything done. The dealer was a distant afterthought by the time we were finished.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does GMC dealer key replacement actually take?▼

The programming itself is not the slow part. A tech with the right tools can run through the key learning procedure in roughly 15 to 20 minutes of actual work. The slow part is everything around it: getting on the service schedule, waiting for a fob to come in if they don't stock it, getting a certified tech assigned, and billing in labor blocks that don't reflect how long the job really took.
