2010 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Does the GMC dealer really require a tow for key replacement on a Savana with no working key?

More often than not, yes. Dealers are set up for vehicles that drive in. If your Savana has no working key, they have no clean way to get it into their service lane without a tow, and that cost lands on you before the key work even starts. Full-size vans are not light or cheap to move. I come to wherever the van is parked and do the programming through the OBD port on site.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the Savana before you can cut a key?

A valid photo ID and something that ties you to the vehicle: registration, title, or insurance paperwork showing the VIN. I verify the VIN from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker on the van itself, cross-reference it against your documents, and note everything before I start. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, just done on the spot in the parking lot instead of at a service counter.

Q: I have one working key for my Savana. Can I add a spare without going to the dealer?

Sometimes, yes. The Savana's immobilizer system has an onboard procedure that can enroll an additional key when you already have a working key in hand. Whether it applies to your specific setup depends on the year and configuration, but 2010 is in the window where that option can exist. The catch is that the blank still has to have the right transponder chip inside it, and the blade still has to be cut correctly.

Q: My Savana starts fine but the door locks on the remote stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Probably not. The remote entry system and the transponder that starts the engine are independent on this van. If the engine starts, the transponder is enrolled and healthy. A remote that stopped locking and unlocking is almost always a sync issue or a problem with the receiver module, not the key itself. This also comes up after a battery disconnect or jump start. Try a re-sync first before assuming you need new hardware.

2010 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Bear Valley, Escondido, I got a call about a 2010 GMC Savana that had been sitting in a commercial parking lot for two days. The owner had snapped his only key off in the door lock, and the broken portion was still inside the cylinder.

He had already called the dealer. They wanted the van towed in, charged a diagnostic fee just to look at it, and quoted him separately for the key blank, the cut, and the programming labor. The tow alone was going to eat a big chunk of the total before anything else started.

I drove out to him instead.

First thing was extracting the broken blade from the door cylinder, which I handled on site with the van exactly where it sat. Then I cut a new key blade to match the vehicle and programmed the transponder chip through the OBD port. The whole job was done before he finished his phone calls.

He paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted, and he never moved the van. That is usually how these go. The dealer process assumes you can bring the vehicle to them. When you can't, their quote gets a lot uglier fast.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare. Can you come to me in Bear Valley?▼

Yes. That is exactly what mobile service is for. If your 2010 Savana is sitting in a driveway, a parking lot, or on the street anywhere in the Bear Valley area of Escondido, I come to the vehicle. I carry the blanks and equipment to handle the Savana on site. No tow, no appointment, no waiting for a shop bay to open up. Call and I can usually give you an arrival window right then.
