Canyon Key Generations
1st Generation (GMT355)
Launch generation 2004-2012 on the GMT355 platform shared with the Chevy Colorado. Pure PASSLOCK system, resistance-based, no transponder chip in the key at all. We cut to factory code and run the on-board relearn at the curb.
Interim (GMT355 Extended)
Late-cycle 2010-2012 builds kept the same PASSLOCK architecture. The flip-key fobs that show up on some trims integrate the remote but the immobilizer side still sees no chip. Same on-board relearn workflow.
2nd Generation (GMT31XX)
Second gen arrived 2015 on the redesigned 31XX chassis. This is where the sidewinder laser-cut blade and proximity option enter the picture. PK3-style transponder logic underneath, OBD programming required.
3rd Generation (GMT31XX II)
2022 refresh moved Canyon over to Global B immobilizer architecture, the same backbone the Hummer EV and refresh Sierra run. Tighter trust chain after any 12V event; current firmware required at the truck.

Canyon Problems We Fix in San Diego
PASSLOCK Sensor Drift on 1st-Gen Trucks
Most 2004-2012 Canyon no-start tickets we close in Spring Valley and East County come from the PASSLOCK sensor inside the ignition cylinder drifting out of spec, not a bad key. We diagnose with a multimeter and bypass or replace the cylinder right there.
Sidewinder Blade Wear (2015+)
2nd-gen sidewinder cuts wear quickly with heavy keychains. Sticky ignitions on Spring Valley and El Cajon trucks are usually blade wear, not cylinder damage. Fresh cut solves most of them.
Global B Auth Failures (2022+)
Refresh Canyons sometimes drop the immobilizer trust chain after 12V events. We rebuild auth on-site with current firmware.
Fob Housing Wear on 2nd Gen
Button rubber wears through on heavy-use 2015-2021 fobs. We rebuild the housing or swap to a fresh shell with chip transfer.
Can You Program a Canyon Key in Your Driveway?
Sort of. 1st-gen Canyon has no transponder chip to program at all, but the PASSLOCK relearn is a 30-minute ignition-on cycle once the blade is cut to your code. The blade cut still needs a code machine.
Same answer as the early 1st gen. Flip-key shell, identical PASSLOCK underneath. No chip programming, blade cut still needs a pro.
