Out in The Crosby section of Rancho Santa Fe, a homeowner called me on a Saturday morning. He'd been dealing with a slow week and the Canyon had sat in the driveway for a few days. When he finally went to leave, the key turned, the engine caught for about one second, then shut right off. Tried it twice more. Same thing each time.
He figured it was a fuel issue. Maybe a battery drain. He'd already called a mechanic who told him to get it towed.
I showed up, turned the key myself, and watched it start and die. That pattern, where the engine catches and then shuts down almost immediately, points straight to the immobilizer doing its job. The mechanic diagnosis would have cost him a tow across town and a few days of the truck sitting at a shop before anyone figured out it wasn't a fuel or battery problem at all. Being able to read that start-and-stall pattern on site is most of the job.
