My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out without replacing the whole cylinder?

Usually yes. Broken key extraction is a standard mobile job and most of the time the cylinder survives intact. I use extraction tools sized for the keyway to grab or hook the broken piece without grinding or forcing anything. Once it's out, I can cut a new key on site from your vehicle's lock data or by decoding the lock directly.

The one caveat with the Canyon and older GM trucks generally: if the cylinder already had a lot of wear before the key broke, extraction sometimes reveals that the cylinder itself is the underlying problem. I'll tell you that on site before you decide anything. But assuming the cylinder is in reasonable shape, extraction and a new cut key is a same-visit fix.

Question 2

What exactly is a transponder key and how is it different from a regular metal key?

Your 2017 Canyon uses a transponder key. It looks like a standard metal key but there's a small chip sealed inside the plastic head. When you turn the key, the ignition's antenna ring powers that chip passively and reads a code from it. If the code matches what the immobilizer expects, the engine is allowed to run. If it doesn't match, or if the chip isn't there at all, the truck will crank and then die within a couple of seconds.

A plain metal key cut to the right shape will turn the ignition and crank the engine. It just won't keep it running. That's the tell.

If your key head cracks or the plastic breaks but the chip is undamaged, I can often move the chip into a new shell and cut a replacement blade, which costs less than starting from scratch with a whole new key.

My GMC Canyon is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

On a transponder turn-key like the Canyon, a key-not-detected or theft-deterrent warning at startup almost always points to the chip not being read by the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. A few things cause that.

First, try your spare key if you have one. If the spare starts the truck normally, the chip in your primary key may have cracked or failed inside the head, which happens when keys take a hard drop or get bent.

Second, look at the antenna ring itself. On GM trucks of this era, owners report that the ring can loosen or develop a break in the wiring, which means no key gets read reliably, not just yours. The symptom is intermittent: sometimes it starts fine, sometimes it cranks and immediately stalls.

Third, if you see a persistent theft-deterrent warning on the dash and the truck won't stay running regardless of which key you use, that points to a communication issue between the antenna, the immobilizer, or the ignition switch itself. That's a diagnosis job, not a battery swap. Call me and I'll run it down on site.

Question 4

I only have one key for my Canyon. Is it worth getting a spare cut and programmed now, or can I wait until I need it?

Get the spare now. All-keys-lost on a transponder vehicle is more involved than a simple copy job. When you still have a working key in hand, the process is faster and, depending on the year and setup, may allow an onboard relearn sequence as an option alongside the tool-based method. Once you lose that last key, everything has to go through diagnostic equipment and the job takes longer.

Forum threads on the Canyon and its platform-mate are full of owners who waited, lost the one key, then dealt with a significantly bigger job than they expected. A spare cut and programmed while you have your original is the simplest insurance you can buy for this truck.

Question 5

Can I buy a key blank online and have you just program it, or does it have to be a key you supply?

You can, with one condition: the blank has to be the correct type for the 2017 Canyon. The chip inside matters, and not every blank sold online for "GM trucks" actually carries the right chip. I've seen customers show up with a blank that looks identical but won't enroll no matter what. If you buy your own and it turns out to be the wrong spec, you've spent money on something unusable.
