Out in The Bridges in Rancho Santa Fe, I got a call from a Canyon owner who had snapped his only key off in the door lock. The blade was gone. He had the head with the chip still attached, which he was holding up like it meant something.

It did not start the truck.

He had already called the dealer and been told to tow it in, which in that part of Rancho Santa Fe is not a short flat-bed ride to anywhere. He had also already been quoted a number that made him pause before agreeing to it.

I came out to the property with my cutter and programmer. First step was decoding the lock to get the correct key cut, since the original blade was snapped inside the door cylinder and not in great shape as a reference. Cut a new key blank to the vehicle, then programmed the transponder chip to the immobilizer on site through the OBD port.

Turned the key, engine ran, no stall. That is the confirmation you want on a transponder job. If it cranks and dies, something is not right. If it cranks and runs, the chip is talking to the system.

He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer quote and did not put the truck on a flat-bed. The whole job happened in his driveway before he had to be anywhere.
