She was closing up at a brewery in the Las Americas Area of San Ysidro after her bartending shift and her purse was gone. Taken from behind the bar during the rush. Car keys, wallet, phone, all of it. She borrowed a coworker's phone, called the police, then her roommate, then me.
Her 2012 GMC Canyon was sitting in the lot with zero keys. The dealer told her roommate they could help, but the car would need to be towed in, parts had to be ordered, and they recommended rekeying the locks since the stolen key could still open the doors. The combined estimate was enough to make her stomach drop.
I got there that night. All-keys-lost on a transponder key vehicle is a different job than adding a spare. When you add a spare, the car already trusts an existing key and just registers a new one alongside it. All-keys-lost means I wipe the key memory completely so the stolen key can no longer start the engine. Then I program fresh keys from zero.
I connected my programmer to the OBD port, cleared the existing key data from the immobilizer, and programmed two new transponder keys. Then I decoded the door lock with my Lishi tool and cut both blades to match. Tested both in the ignition, both started the car. Done before the officers finished taking her report in the parking lot.
She drove home that night. The stolen key is useless to whoever has it now. The dealer estimate with tow would have taken days she did not have.
