2023 GMC Canyon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you delete lost or stolen fobs from my Canyon so they no longer start the truck?

Yes. The standard programming procedure on GM vehicles like the 2023 Canyon wipes all previously registered fobs and starts a clean enrollment. Only the fobs physically present during the session get registered. So if a key was stolen, the programming session erases it. This is handled as part of the normal process, not a separate step.

Q: Does my 2023 Canyon smart fob have a hidden emergency blade inside?

It does. There's a small release tab on the back of the fob. Press it and the metal blade slides out. That blade gets you into the driver's door mechanically when the fob battery is dead or the fob isn't responding. Once you're inside, don't assume the truck won't start. Hold the fob body directly against the start button and press the brake.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2023 Canyon. Can I program it myself or do I need a tool?

You need a tool. The 2023 Canyon does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the fob. There's no ignition-turn ritual, no button combination that enrolls a new key at home. That style of DIY relearn existed on older GM trucks but it doesn't apply here. The fob you bought online is likely a valid blank, and there's nothing wrong with sourcing it that way. But pairing it to the vehicle requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port.

Q: My Canyon fob range dropped way off and now it only works when I'm right next to the truck. New battery didn't fix it. What's going on?

Short range after a fresh CR2450 is one of the more common complaints I hear on these. A few things cause it. First, check how the battery is seated. The CR2450 is a larger cell and if it's even slightly cocked in the tray, the contact isn't solid and you get weak output even with a new battery. Pop it out, reseat it flat, and retest before assuming anything else is wrong.

2023 GMC Canyon Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy from Ramona Highlands called me on a Tuesday morning. He had a 2023 GMC Canyon and needed a spare fob. His wife had the only key and he was tired of coordinating schedules around it. He'd already looked at the dealer price and called me as a second opinion.

He asked the same question the warehouse supervisor types always ask: is it going to be as good as the one from the dealer. I gave him the honest version. The fob I carry uses the same battery size, the same button layout, the same internal setup the vehicle expects to see. What it doesn't have is the GMC logo embossed on the back housing. If that matters to him, I told him to go to the dealer. Most people decide it doesn't.

I pulled up to his place off the main stretch in Ramona Highlands, van already stocked. Cut the blade to his vehicle, paired the fob through the diagnostic port, tested every button, confirmed the emergency blade slid out clean and went back in tight. The whole thing took under forty minutes on his driveway.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted. That part came up almost as an afterthought. What he kept talking about was that he didn't have to leave.

GMC Canyon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2023 Canyon?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer or a tow truck. All-keys-lost on the 2023 Canyon means the vehicle has no registered fobs at all, and the job requires diagnostic equipment to reset the security system and enroll new keys from scratch. The dealer will do it, but you're looking at scheduling, potentially leaving the truck overnight, and a bill that reflects their overhead.
