2021 GMC Canyon Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy in the Fairbanks Ranch area of Rancho Santa Fe. He had a 2021 GMC Canyon that would crank but not run. Turn the key, engine fires, dies within two seconds. He had already talked to a shop that told him it sounded like a fuel pump issue. They quoted him diagnostic time just to look at it.
He found me before he towed it anywhere.
I asked him a few questions over the phone. Cranks immediately? Yes. No rough idle, just cuts off? Yes. Security light behavior on the dash? He paused and said he thought he remembered a light, but he wasn't sure. That pause told me plenty.
When I got there, I could see the key was worn down noticeably on the head, which can affect how the transponder sits and reads in certain conditions. The immobilizer was not accepting it reliably. The vehicle security system was cutting fuel as designed, doing exactly what it's supposed to do when it doesn't recognize the key.
I cut a fresh replacement key to the vehicle and programmed the transponder on site. First turn, the engine started and stayed running. He stood there for a second, waiting for it to die again out of habit.
It didn't.
He told me a shop had been ready to start pulling things apart looking for a fuel delivery problem. The dealer was a few days out for an appointment. He paid a fraction of what either of those paths would have cost him, and his truck was running in his driveway before lunch.
