How the iQ Key System Works
1st Generation (AG10) - San Diego
Every 2012-2015 iQ ships with a TOY44G high-security blade and a Toyota 4D-G (4D72) transponder chip in the head. No buttons, no remote on the base trim, just a chip talking to the Toyota immobilizer every crank. Toyota didn't update the system across the four-year US run.
1st Generation (AG10) - San Diego Mid-cycle - San Diego
Higher trims and the late-run cars added a 3-button remote head key, same TOY44G blade, same 4D-G chip, with lock/unlock/panic buttons and a CR2032 battery in the head. Programming requires OBD through the Autel, which Marco handles curbside in San Diego.
1st Generation EV Variant (AG10E) - San Diego
You turn this key the same way as the gas model, and the key itself is identical: Toyota 4D-G (4D72) chip, 3-button remote head, CR2032 battery. The only difference is under the hood. Marco verifies ECU compatibility before programming the EV variant, but the process is the same on-board procedure.
1st Generation (AG10) - San Diego Final - San Diego
Across San Diego County, here is the deal. You turn this key knowing it is the last year Scion made the iQ. The key system stayed unchanged: Toyota 4D-G (4D72) transponder, 3-button remote head, CR2032 battery. On-board programming through the OBD-II port, no dealer appointment needed. Same straightforward job we have been doing since the 2012s rolled off the lot.
Which iQ Key Do You Have?
Plain metal high-security blade with the Toyota 4D-G chip molded into the plastic head. Twist it in the ignition, the chip authenticates to the immobilizer, the engine fires. No remote buttons on this version.

EZ Car Keyz vs San Diego Toyota Dealers
Toyota of El Cajon or Mossy Toyota Pacific Beach wants the iQ towed in, two to three days at the service drive, and a $300+ invoice for a TOY44G cut and pair. Marco handles the same job at your curb in Carmel Valley or Mira Mesa for about half, same Toyota 4D-G chip, same Autel OBD pairing, no tow truck.
Common iQ Key Problems in San Diego
All Keys Lost on a 2012-2015 iQ
Lost both keys to the iQ in a Hillcrest lot, or bought used with only one? A fresh TOY44G with 4D-G chip from zero needs a PIN pulled live from Toyota's TIS server, where every chain locksmith hits a wall. Marco runs all-keys-lost in San Diego, no tow.
Key Fob Battery Drain - San Diego
Dead 12V or a sloppy jump knocks the iQ immobilizer out of sync with a good key, engine cranks but won't fire. Marco plugs the Autel into OBD-II in San Diego and runs the Toyota relearn to resync key and ECU. About a 15-minute fix.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Loss - San Diego
The iQ's plastic key head cracks at the ring eye if you carry it on a heavy keychain, common in San Diego with all the stuff owners hang off the key. Once cracked, the chip antenna loses contact and authentication fails. Marco cuts and pairs a fresh TOY44G.
Blade Wear on Ignition - San Diego
The TOY44G blade is high-security and thin, so it bends or snaps if you pry or rotate against a stuck cylinder. Marco extracts broken pieces from iQ ignitions in San Diego and cuts a fresh blade to your Toyota key code on the spot.
Can You Self-Program an iQ Key in San Diego?
No. Every iQ key requires OBD programming with professional equipment like the Autel IM608, and all-keys-lost requires a Toyota TIS server PIN on top of that. Call Marco at (619) 876-1271 and the whole job runs curbside in San Diego.

Cut, Program, and Test

Did You Know?
Aston Martin re-skinned the iQ, dropped in leather and a quilted headliner, and sold it as the Cygnet from 2011 to 2013 to help meet European fleet emissions averages. They charged about $50,000 for what is mechanically a $16,000 Scion. The key system is identical, Toyota 4D-G chip in a TOY44G blade, and Marco could technically cut and pair an Aston Martin Cygnet key with the same tools he uses on your iQ in Rancho Bernardo. Same car, three badges, three price tags.
