2012 Scion IQ Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a graphic designer working out of a studio space in the Nestor area of Otay Mesa. She had one key for her 2012 Scion iQ, it was the original, and she wanted a spare before the inevitable happened. Her words: "I know I'm living on borrowed time with one key."
She had already called the dealer. Parts quoted her the fob, then the service desk quoted programming on top of that, and she did the math and realized she would also need to take time off during a deadline week just to get the car there. The numbers did not work for her schedule or her budget.
I met her in the studio parking lot on her lunch break. The iQ is a compact car, and I mean compact. I have serviced a lot of small vehicles, but this thing makes a MINI look roomy. Pulled up next to it in my van and the size difference was almost funny.
The job itself was clean. Connected to the OBD port, registered the new remote head key through the immobilizer, cut the blade to her vehicle, and walked through every button and the start cycle before I closed anything up. Thirty minutes, start to finish, including the verification.
She kept her afternoon free, stayed on deadline, and paid a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost once you factor in what a tow would have added if she had ever actually gotten stranded. Getting a spare made before a problem happens is always the smarter call.
